There’s no better way to say ‘happy first weekend of the new year’ then getting out and seeing some shows – or at least that’s what we’d like to think. Trios and duos abound; experimental, electronic, and rocking-out sorts. Catching up with old favorites and new names the hands-on, in-venue approach way is the preferred, most effective method. To a year of fresh and exciting new music, we say… check them out below.

Friday may have been Phriday for all the Phish fans, there was plenty going on at golden gate park for everyone that wasn’t into watching a 4 hour marathon set. While we stopped and enjoyed the hippie jam masters at work we couldn’t just limit our evening to just one group.

Of course our picks for the weekend are all over the place, nothing new there – from hard noise rock to folk-and-percussion styles, to mellow pop punk, there’s a little bit of something for everyone. Best Coast (Bethany Consentino + Bobb Bruno) finally have an official video for their hit track, “When I’m With You.” Instead of some old 50s footage many have gotten used to seeing paired up with the song, the new video sports some unlikely team-ups. Aquarium Drunkard‘s annual WAVED OUT event returned to The Echo and The Echoplex this past weekend and with a killer lineup, BeatCrave made sure to get over there and soak in all the musical talent both stages would be overflowing with. Of course, we weren’t the only ones there; both venues continued to pack in more music fiends like us late into the night. For a measly $12, concert goers were pampered with free ice cream, food trucks, free t-shirts, bingo, and sixteen bands! If you missed out, no worries! We have a re-cap and a TON of photos to share with you after the jump!
