April 28th has come a few days early for some fans of Bob Dylan.
Digital Music News is reporting that Dylan’s new album, “Together Through Life,” leaked Wednesday night; originally set to debut Tuesday.
The report notes that a former label exec found copies of the complete album on the Usenet access app UseNext. A Pirate Bay torrent was also uploaded. It shouldn’t be too long before the new Dylan tracks are all over the Internet.
Fantastic news for supporters of free music (but seriously, who’s opposed?): Bob Dylan is joining the club. The 67-year-old singer-songwriter legend is giving away the first single from his upcoming album, “Together Through Life,” set for an April 27 release.
The track, “Beyond Here Lies Nothin’,” is available as an MP3 download on Dylan’s official website. But hurry! The link for the song is only available for 24 hours, so it will be gone by the end of today (March 30). Continue Reading
Attention festivalphiles of the world: If you don’t have 4th of July Weekend plans yet, reserve a spot on your calendar. Michigan’s Rothbury music festival will return for its 2nd annual event July 2-5 at the Doulbe JJ Ranch and Resort to bring you a genuine slice of jam-band heaven.
With headliners The Dead (playing their only summer date), Bob Dylan and His Band, The String Cheese Incident and Willie Nelson, it’s clear that Rothbury will take the forefront of hippie-rock-revival shows so far this year (sorry Bonnaroo, you got Phish, but Dylan and The Dead just set a new bar). The headliners might appeal primarily to an older crowd, but the fest has much more to offer…
If you’re a little younger and hip with the times, no worries. This year’s lineup features a variety of contemporary genres, from indie groups like Guster and Broken Social Scene to hip-hop and dance acts like Girl Talk and Chromeo. Here’s the full lineup:

Forever Young: This commercial features a remix of Bob Dylan‘s “Forever Young” with Will.I.Am rapping a couple of verses. It first aired during Pepsi’s superbowl spot and continues to get mixed reactions. The ad focuses on the comparisons between the two artists’ generations by featuring waving lighters to glowing cell phones, Gumby to Shrek, John Belushi to Jack Black, and more. The montage is actually effective, but in the end, can these two artists really be compared like that? We want to know what you think.
Bob Dylan made William Zantzinger famous with his song, “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll,” a performance of which can be seen above. Zantzinger, a white man, killed black barmaid Hattie Carroll but received a sentence of only six years in prison. Dylan wrote his song about the case as an example of social injustice.
The old people of England have their knickers in a knot over the possible demise of morris dancing. What is morris dancing you may be pondering? It’s a renaissance form of dance that enjoyed a resurgence, along with folk music in the 1960s and ’70s. The most important part of this type of dance is wearing crazy outfits that involve bells on one’s knees and crazy hats. Since most young people do not find it fun to dress up as old coots and do quaint little dances, some are forecasting that the form may die out within the next 20 years.
I can only imagine what it was like to discover Bob Dylan for the first time in the 1960’s, but I think I had a similar experience at Jack Savoretti’s gig at the Hotel Café last week. I was completely lost in the 23-year-old singer-songwriter’s lyrics of evocative travels and lovers lost. His voice is a mixture of joy one moment and then agonizing pain the next. Jack Savoretti’s music takes you on a journey across the world through his eyes. He is like a novel that must be read. It is no exaggeration or misappropriation to say that he is undoubtedly the Bob Dylan of the 21st Century.
Nirvana fans can now download the book “In Utero” by Gillian G. Gear, for free. For the book Gear talked to people behind the scenes of Nirvana to paint a real picture about what it was like for the band to create the album.
The book is part of the 33 1/3 series by Audible.com which contains books are classic, critically acclaimed albums. Other books that made the series include a book on Bob Dylan’s Highway 61 Revisited, and the Smiths’ Meat is Murder.
I caught Stacy* Clark’s set at The Knitting Factory last week and was so blown away by her performance that I demanded an interview. Clark, a guitar playing singer songwriter, and her band performed a powerful set of guitar-heavy songs and heartfelt melodies from her album, Apples & Oranges. Clark is the Winner of the 2007 Orange County Music Awards for ‘Best Female Performer’ and ‘Best Female Artist’ 2006 Southern California Music Awards. Her music has appeared on the MTV and CBS television networks, and she has appeared on stage with Jacks Mannequin, and the Amsterdams. Thankfully, she took time out to answer a few questions.
