Next year will mark 30 years since Bob Marley left us, but his music is forever. In a swirl of recent licensing deals put into play by Marley’s family (Marley & Co.) to help celebrate the reggae icon, we get Bob Marley’s final recorded performance, which is to be released for the first time.
Recorded 30 years ago while Marley was touring in support of his album Uprising, the upcoming Bob Marley & The Wailers – Live Forever will be released as a 2CD/3LP/digital collection on February 1.

Bob Marley’s family have lost their copyright battle with Universal Music Group (UMG) over the ownership of five of the late reggae icon’s most celebrated albums.
NME reports that a federal judge in New York has ruled that copyrights to Catch A Fire, Burnin’, Natty Dread, Rastaman Vibrations and Exodus, each recorded with his band The Wailers between 1973 and 1977 for Island Records, entitled UMG to be designated the owner of those recordings.

Pretty good chance you either own the Bob Marley best-of compilation, Legend, or know someone who does. It’s one of those ubiquitous albums that feel like it’s been around forever – 1984, to be exact, three years after the reggae pioneer passed away.
And now the perfect gateway album into the amazing musical legacy of Bob Marley and the Wailers has just become 17th album to sell over 10 million copies.
Legend: The Best of Bob Marley and the Wailers entered the Billboard charts at No. 168 and peaked at No. 54; the Jamaican singer-songwriter never had a top-40 hit, but this terrific collection has sold more copies since 1991 (when SoundScan began tracking) than any other album of the ’60s, ’70s, or ’80s.

Bob Marley’s family has struck a deal with private equity firm Hilco to license the reggae legend’s name, lyrics and image for merchandising. The family (including Ziggy and Damian) is ready to put Marley’s name on shoes, hotels, beer, coffee, video games, and musical instruments, among other products.
The family has gotten tired of black-market products using the singer’s name freely. His eldest daughter, Cedella, told the BBC:
“This is a big business for bootleggers. We want to stop some of the nonsense, and make sure the great stuff upholds our standards. We’re in control.”
