One of my main goals during the SXSW Festival was to catch Broken Bells at some point during the week. Fortunately for me, I stumbled across a parking garage where James Mercer and Danger Mouse were filming a show for Spinner. After making the cutoff by only 20 people AOL treated us to some free beer and hot dogs before funneling everyone downstairs for the video shoot. This could have been an example of being in the right place at the right time, so I took full advantage and I’ve got plenty of pictures to show for it!

Last Friday duo, Broken Bells, comprised of members James Mercer of The Shins and Danger Mouse, announced that they were playing a show that night over at Bootleg Theatre. If you ask us, that was pretty sneaky of them since the venue in Los Angeles holds a small capacity. Within a half hour of the announcement, the show was sold out. For those lucky enough to attend, they got to see Broken Bell’s debut performance backed by a band with members from Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band and Hella. They even covered Neutral Milk Hotel in their encore.
However, if you did happen to miss it – no worries! The Troubadour has just announced that Broken Bells will playing another Los Angeles show on March 14th, 2010. More info after the jump!

Side projects are always welcome, as long as they are just that – side projects. When side projects become the main project, fans begin to have something to worry about. One of the latest collaborations is Broken Bells with Brian Danger Mouse Burton and James Mercer of The Shins.
Recently, Mercer told NME that he had started Broken Bells because The Shins started to feel heavy. This led many fans to believe that Mercer was pulling the plug on the Shins. To clarify what he meant, Mercer told MTV that he was interested in both projects and that he didn’t plan to quit the Shins:

Broken Bells, the team-up between The Shins‘ James Mercer and Danger Mouse, have just released a video for their first single, ‘The High Road.” For a song that has the perfect amount of electronic elements that easily melt into the indie and almost soft-rock we’re accustomed to hearing with Mercer’s vocals, the video seems just about right. However, by right, we don’t mean normal either.

Tough to find a news item able to trump the Thom Yorke forms new band headline presently shaking the music world to its core, but word that The Shins frontman James Mercer and Danger Mouse are also forming a new band comes pretty darn close.
