As we previously mentioned in our introductory article to Outside Lands Festival, getting a chance to see Cat Power aka Chan Marshall perform again was pretty exciting. Although she did play Coachella in 2009, we haven’t heard much from the sultry-voiced singer-songwriter since then.
There were many things about Cat Power’s set that took on a very different vibe from her performances that took place years ago. The most notable change was her confidence – which she seemed to have a lot more of this time around.

You’re sitting in a dark movie theater watching the latest blockbuster, indie comedy, or zombie thriller when all of a sudden a familiar voice echoes in the background. Instead of focusing on the actors on the screen, you zone out while listening to the melodic tune of your favorite musician. When you’re two greatest loves are film and music, nothing could be better than hearing you’re favorite band on your favorite movie’s soundtrack.
When it comes to the silver screen, there are plenty of great film composers to choose from, but Hollywood should try a different approach. There are some amazing bands out there that could easily do the job, and breath new life into the film while at it. Therefore, we’ve come up with a list of musicians who we think could give Hans Zimmer a run for his money.

Trust me when I tell you that even when you buy downloads on Amazon, or iTunes, the feeling is not the same because you don’t have the packaging of the music you bought. Although downloading is very convenient, there is no feeling like tearing apart that CD wrapper and looking through the art in the booklet. So dear readers here is another cheap DVDs series to keep you happy and save you time because we know you’re busy.

Some of us have lives (AKA commuting, working nine-to-five, commuting some more, etc…) and some of us spend most of our time (to our paychecks’ dismay) surfing the web for all the free and entertaining music tidbits we can get our hands on. For those of you in the latter category who haven’t yet scored your fix for today, here are some starting points:
- Are you one of those music fans who loves a visual element to go along with your all-American music (I know I’m a fan of picture books)? If your answer if, ‘By God, I do love pictures with my music!’, then check out this sweet four-part illustrated show review (sample shown above) by artist Ariel Kitch of Alela Diane and Blitzen Trapper playing at Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis. Seriously, this is an awesome concept – we need more sketch artists doing show reviews!
- Ground control to Cat Power fans, this one’s for you. If you haven’t been flipping channels during TV commercials, you might have heard none other than Chan Marshall (AKA Cat Power) singing David Bowie‘s “Space Oddity” over a new ad for Lincoln’s 2009 MKS. So far, we’ve only got the clip available (below), but cross your fingers that this rendition ends up on another cover album from Marshall! Great choice…
