No, Cher fans—I’m assuming that some of you actually exist—don’t worry. The “I Got You Babe” and “Believe” singer is still alive, despite a rumor that has spread on wildfire that the singer/actress (real name: Cherilyn Sarkisian, which actually sounds cooler than just “Cher,” in a supervillain kind of way) had died.
Unless you’ve been living under a particularly large and heavy rock lately, you’ve likely heard that Chaz Bono has been added to the cast of Dancing with the Stars season 13. In addition, you’ve also likely heard that the more conservative cultural elements of the population are bristling over the fact that a transgender person—Chaz—is being featured on the show. The strife has led to several celebrity’s jumping to Chaz’s defense, including, most recently, his mother, singer/ actress Cher.
Because the self-congratulatory pop-cultural circle-jerk that is the MTV Video Music Awards was last night, in which celebrities joined together to celebrate being celebrities and award themselves thusly, I’m here to write something about it as opposed to, you know, anything substantive or meaningful in the music world.
But still—Katy Perry had Russell Brand’s face on her fingertips! Lady Gaga made with the funny hat! Taylor Swift desperately clung to last year’s Kanye controversy to distract from her alarmingly poor live vocals! Eminem looked pissy and crossed his arms a lot! How can one not be swept away by the pomp and production of such glitterati and anti-substance?
And, if anything summed up the hyper relevance of last night’s VMAs, it was the appearance of a 64-year-old Cher squeezing into some black leather and sequins to reference a video that was filmed 21 years ago and was cheesy even then. Truly, MTV, you have found the pulse of our generation.
It’s that time of year again when we show appreciation to the men who we owe our lives to. No, I am not talking about your future ex-husbands (you know I’m right, have you seen the divorce rates these days??), I am talking about your father!
Now even though I was generalizing and not all children are blessed to have a father who is always there for them and who always provides them with the love and affection they need but, for the sake of this editorial, we are going to pretend we all have the perfect father and we are trying to get our perfect father the perfect album for a Father’s Day gift.
