Today Steve Jobs once again made one of his huge, and very dramatic announcements regarding the latest product from Apple. He unveiled a new line of iPods, which he called the “strongest lineup of iPods we’ve ever had.” Damn Steve, no pressure there. Greetings and welcome back to Beatcrave after a long weekend of Oscar mania. Now that the film industry has had its moment in the spotlight, let’s get back to the music. Here are some fresh news items you may have missed over the weekend:

  • First, the bad news. It was announced Saturday that Kelly Groucutt, bass player for Electric Light Orchestra, died of a heart attack Feb. 19 at the age of 63. Groucutt became a permanent member of ELO in 1974 for the ‘Eldorado’ tour and he recorded with the band for the first time on the 1975 album, “Face the Music.” Although he officially left the band in 1983, Groucutt was instrumental in promoting the band in later years for various ELO side-projects. A moment of silence, please, for this symphonic rock legend.
  • Well, I honestly haven’t seen anything about Australian singer Natalie Imbruglia since she made it on MTV in 1997, but apparently she’s still out there, and she’s stepping it up with a new partnership on her next album. The 34-year-old singer announced Saturday that she has teamed up with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, who has apparently written a ‘string of tracks’ for her fourth album. Imbruglia received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album back in ’97, but got beat out by Madonna‘s “Ray of Light.” With Martin at her side, maybe she’s gearing up for a rematch.

coldplay Coldplay says they ripped off Jeff Buckley, Diss Their Own Shows

Coldplay has admitted to ripping off the work of a fellow musician. In an interview today on the Chris Moyles Show on BBC Radio 1 in London Chris Martin described the groups 200 single “Shiver” as “a blatant Jeff Buckley attempt…Not quite as good, that’s what I think. We were 21 and he was very much a hero, and as with those things it tends to filter through.”

The Coldplay frontman went on to give Coldplay’s recent performances in London “a 3 out of 10″ That’s two pretty big attacks at his own band in just one interview. Was he drunk?

Check out a video of “Shiver” and listen for the Jeff Buckley influences for yourself after the break:
