When I heard that Sir Paul McCartney would headline opening night (April 17) at this year’s Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, my enthusiasm was on the fence. Would the audience be subjected to song after mediocre song from the former Beatle’s recent solo projects? Or would Sir Paul ‘wow’ us with a plethora of classic Beatles tunes?

Most chatter among festivalgoers during the first day eminated disillusionment with the set before it started, but when the show actually began, the shit-talking stopped abruptly. For all of those that have forgotten or never realized the power of the Beatles’ music, this show was a true testament, and it warrants further discussion.

McCartney did pull from his solo projects, including a couple tracks from his ‘alter-ego’ The Fireman, but the songs were expertly woven between spurts of passionately played Beatles hits that spanned the band’s career.

Take a gander at the 35-song set list:

Glass Candy is surprisingly entertaining live; they are deceivingly good for only two people. For Coachella, they took their live show a step further and brought out lots of giant, multi-colored balloons on stage. Between the balloons and Ida No’s outfit, it kind of felt like you were in a circus/80′s workout video. If you haven’t heard them before, take a listen over at their myspace.

Almost everyone was expecting a surprise main stage headliner for Saturday (April 18) evening at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, but all we got was The Killers – a bit of a letdown, to say the least. But fortunately, there were other options to close out the day. With thundering beats provided by a full band plus DJ Ant, Minneapolis hip-hoppers Atmosphere, headed up by emcee Slug, attracted a substantial crowd at the Outdoor Theatre and overpowered the wailing of The Killers to end the night on a positive note.

If you missed it (shame on you for going to see The Killers), check out some photos from the show below…

Despite the early set time (12:45 p.m.), Themselves‘ Sunday (April 19) show in the Gobi tent at the Coachella Music & Arts Festival drew a sizable audience that didn’t seem phased by the sweltering heat. While producer Jel (Jeff Logan) pounded Heinekens between laying down erratic beats, emcee Doseone skipped around the stage with enough genuine vigor to keep the crowd alert and dancing for a solid 40 minutes. Gotta love that intellectual-white-boy hip-hop.

One of the great things about music festivals is discovering new music. I stumbled upon Tinariwen as I was walking around. Thankfully I did; it turned out to be one of the best sets I saw the entire weekend. Tinariwen is from Mali, and it definitely shows in their music. Their music sounds like a blend of African/Middle Eastern music with a folksy/bluesy rock sound. It was especially refreshing to hear something completely different from all the rest.

By early Sunday evening (April 19) at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, festival goers were beginning to show signs of exhaustion. Fans who sweated through an excruciating 15-minute delay for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs‘ much anticipated set looked as if they might drop dead from the heat. But as soon as Karen O swept onto the stage adorned in her blue and green polka-dotted leggings and flamboyant golden top, the crowd was reinvigorated.

Long story short: In a matter of minutes, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs transformed the main stage crowd into a full-blown dance party. Check out some photos from the show below…

The winner of most elaborate set at Coachella definitely goes to N.A.S.A., aka Squeak E. Clean and DJ Zegon. The amount of costumes they had for the 50 minute set was truly astounding. It was filled with space suits, a space ship, aliens, robots, green dancers, 7 ft tall mutant bugs, and weird phallic-looking creatures. This went way beyond a typical DJ set, but it certainly got the crowd going. The actual set was a lot of fun as well, but the theatrics added a little extra flair. Check out their myspace if you haven’t heard them.
