The summer concert ticket buying bonanza is in full swing as this week you have a full slate of options on how to spend the entertainment portion of your budget. Want some 90′s throwback? Got ya covered. Cool British band? We have two for you! Kids bugging you to take them to a show? Get out your wallet. Here’s an overview of the national concert onsales for this weekend, both big and small.
Apparatjikis the brand new project from bassist Guy Berryman of Coldplay, Jonas Bjerre from Danish band MEW and Magne Furuholmen from the legendary 1980′s band A-Ha (remember Take On Me?).
Self-described as “experimental electronica” on their Myspace page, the band’s personal message to fans is “keep it a secret”, and they claim to be from Antarctica. In any case, we couldn’t keep this secret from you, so check out another song after the break, and tell us if it strikes your fancy:
Greetings and welcome back to Beatcrave after a long weekend of Oscar mania. Now that the film industry has had its moment in the spotlight, let’s get back to the music. Here are some fresh news items you may have missed over the weekend:
First, the bad news. It was announced Saturday that Kelly Groucutt, bass player for Electric Light Orchestra, died of a heart attack Feb. 19 at the age of 63. Groucutt became a permanent member of ELO in 1974 for the ‘Eldorado’ tour and he recorded with the band for the first time on the 1975 album, “Face the Music.” Although he officially left the band in 1983, Groucutt was instrumental in promoting the band in later years for various ELO side-projects. A moment of silence, please, for this symphonic rock legend.
Well, I honestly haven’t seen anything about Australian singer Natalie Imbruglia since she made it on MTV in 1997, but apparently she’s still out there, and she’s stepping it up with a new partnership on her next album. The 34-year-old singer announced Saturday that she has teamed up with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, who has apparently written a ‘string of tracks’ for her fourth album. Imbruglia received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album back in ’97, but got beat out by Madonna‘s “Ray of Light.” With Martin at her side, maybe she’s gearing up for a rematch.
Friday the 13th has suffered from the longstanding reputation of being a day filled with bad luck. Those who suffer from paraskavedekatriaphobia, the fear of Friday the 13th, will likely be stuck inside all day in hopes that the devils of this sporadic holiday will leave them alone.
It seems that some of superbly talented musicians, songwriters and singers suffer from superstitious tendencies. Whether it’s UB40 echoing Stevie Wonder’s fears about the “writing on the wall,” those crazy Swedes in the band Europe, ironically swearing that they are “not superstitious,” or The Kills every statement that, “superstition is/your modern eye,” it’s apparent that even the musically inclined will be effected by this Friday the 13th.
For the rest of us, Friday the ’13th is just another Friday and that alone is reason enough to celebrate!
Whether you buy into the fear associated with this day or are just glad it is Friday, BeatCrave has come up with an awesome list of superstitious songs for everyone’s viewing and listening pleasure.
After last year’s dismal TV audiences, the 2009 Grammy Awards captured 19.05 million households, up from 17.18 million in 2009. With a variety of artists, spanning decades of music, the 3 ½ hour CBS broadcast was able to appeal to all ages and galvanize the failing industry.
Jack Sussman, an executive vice president at CBS Entertainment said:
“The Recording Academy put on quite a show — an unprecedented 24 performances and a range of artists that appealed to ‘tweens,’ teens, young adults and [baby] boomers.”
Last night, The Grammys did what they do best: Cram 24 performances into one night between all the awards. Award highlights go out to Coldplay for best rock album (no surprise there), Robert Plant and Alison Krauss for record of the year, and Lil Wayne taking the grammy for best rap album.
The performances ranged from painful (Kid Rock) to ridiculous (Katy Perry). Yet, there was a glimpse of actual entertainment when M.I.A. came out with the “Rap Pack” (Kanye, T.I., Jay-Z, Lil Wayne) in an outfit that not only accentuated her nine months pregnant belly, but also saved whoever’s ass came up with the “Rap Pack” idea. However, the bonus performance for everyone was Radiohead’s spectacular show of “15 Step” complete with the USC marching band fully backing Yorke.
Check out the performances from Radiohead, Kanye, Coldplay, and more after the jump!
Coldplay announced their North American Tour Dates for 2009. They will be kicking off in Portland, OR begining July 10, 2009. This tour will be in support of Coldplay’s Grammy Nominated album, “Viva La Vida.”
Throbbing Gristle have announced dates for their first North American tour since 1981. The short tour hitting only a handful of major US cities will include a performance at the upcoming Coachella Music Festival.
The Maccabees will take an extended tour throughout the UK in support of their presently untitled follow up to 2007′s “Colour it In.”
Tour dates for all three bands are listed below… Continue Reading
What do The Killers and Coldyplay have in common? I mean aside from selling their souls to the music Gods for massive amounts of money? They are going to team up for a one-off gig at London’s O2 Shepherds Bush Empire in aid of the War Child charity on February 18th.
Here is what Coldplay had to say about the show: “In our eyes, War Child is one of the world’s most important charities, and The Killers are one of our favourite bands, so playing this concert is an absolute pleasure for us.”
Coldplay have officially become wooden. No, seriously, they have. In their new music video they perform as puppets in an elementary school class room. Yeah I know that was a bad joke, so let’s just get to it…
