Officially cementing his title as Seriously, the Coolest Musician in America, Right?  I Mean Seriously!, Dave Grohl has temporarily become the drummer of Kentucky up and comers Cage the Elephant.  Why, you ask?  Well, Cage the Elephant’s drummer, Jared Champion, was recently hospitalized due to a ruptured appendix.  So, Grohl said he would step in and drum for the band in Champion’s absence.

Nirvana’s tenure as an active rock band ended tragically when frontman Kurt Cobain took his own life. It would have been blasphemy to trudge on with a new band leader, and anyway, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl always had far too much love and respect for their fallen friend to ever try to replace him.

Novoselic more or less exited the music scene, but Grohl went on to have a successful career of his own with the Foo Fighters, a band which he formed in part as a way to deal with the grief caused by Cobain’s death.

 Them Crooked Vultures Supergroup Unveiled At Metro

It turns out our little hunch about the supergroup, Them Crooked Vultures, was right on! The super rock group formed by Foo Fighters‘ Dave Grohl, Led Zeppelin‘s John Paul Jones, and Queens of the Stone Age‘s Josh Homme unveiled themselves at the Lollapalooza‘s after-show and fans were not disappointed!

After a hot and sticky then wet and rainy three-day festival, everyone was psyched to catch the first Them Crooked Vultures show in history. Rumors were flying around and tickets were bought (no scalper would accept less than $2,000 according to Stereogum) and the anticipation for speculation to become reality seemed to give everyone in attendance an extreme high that night.

 Possible Lollapalooza Aftershow with Them Crooked Vultures

After numerous online speculations about Foo Fighters‘ Dave Grohl, Led Zeppelin‘s John Paul Jones, and Queens of the Stone Age‘s Josh Homme forming  a supergroup, it turns out that the rumors are ACTUALLY true! The three musicians collectively call themselves Them Crooked Vultures and apparently, they’ve been working on a studio album for three years.

If you’re happy with that mere tidbit, then you’ll be stoked to hear that Them Crooked Vultures have potentially been booked to play Lollapalooza‘s aftershow! Perhaps this also will soothe fans of the Beastie Boys and those not-much-fans of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The band name wasn’t officially announced but the sign above with the three symbols each representing 1/3 of the supergroup was posted.

In case you missed anything, here is some news that took place over the weekend!

  • Foo Fighters frontman, Dave Grohl made a special appearance to his birth town where he was having a street named after him. The singer was also presented with a key to the city of Warren, Ohio. The city’s Market Alley will be renamed after him.  Read about the event and what he treated the fans that showed up to the appearance to. (NME)
  • Black Eyed Peas did what no other duo or group has been able to do. They stayed on the top of US Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart for a record 17 weeks in a row (12 weeks with “Boom Boom Pow” and now 5 weeks with “I’ve gotta Feeling“). More information on this accomplishment including who hold the overall record is available. (NME) What do you think, do they deserve the honor or are they an overrated band?

Must be all about the supergroup these days. Word is that Dave Grohl is now recording with Queens Of The Stone Age’s Josh Homme and, oh yes, Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones.

Antiquiet.com first had word of the rock trio currently inhabiting a Los Angeles recording studio, working on a full-length album.  According to the website, Grohl had the idea for the project way back in ’05, as evidenced by what he said in an interview with Mojo magazine:

For late English singer/songwriter Nick Drake, the stars have aligned. At least, the music stars have.

Dave Grohl, Eddie Vedder, Norah Jones, Jack Johnson and late actor Heath Ledger have all been confirmed as contributors to a Drake tribute album. The album will be released later this year on Johnson’s Brushfire Records.
