“This is Bowie to Bowie” is a line from aFlight of the Conchords song in which they paid tribute to the superstar.
Well, now all David Bowie fans can celebrate the the musician with reissues of Space Oddity and Station to Station!
It’s been 40 years since the release of the mishmash of folk and progressive rock called Space Oddity and it makes perfect sense for Virgin/EMI to release it as a deluxe reissue. According to P4k, this redux includes: a two-disc version of the record, complete with unreleased demos, radio sessions, and several alternative album mixes. The glorious collection will be available on 2-CD set, 180-gram limited edition vinyl, and as a download starting November 3rd.
A solid five-some on deck this week of music for the Coming Soon file; a nice mix old-school heavyweights and exciting new artists.
Everyone’s favorite Thin White Duke, David Bowie returns with a re-release of a special-edition EP of the spooky, rock classic “Space Oddity” on July 20, the 40th anniversary of Neil Armstrong’s stroll on the moon. This time with a DIY spin.
Four versions of the song (three edits and a 1979 rerecording) will be released as The Space Oddity Digital EP, according to Bowie’s website. Buyers will get eight tracks featuring various instruments for free, which can be rearranged and remixed by fans.

So it looks like fans aren’t too happy with Coachella this year. They are specifically pissed about The Killers being Saturday night’s headliner. In this case, complaints have basically been saying that Saturday should have a bigger band. Oh Coachella, what to do? You can see everyone’s peeved thoughts on the Coachella message boards.
Some of us have lives (AKA commuting, working nine-to-five, commuting some more, etc…) and some of us spend most of our time (to our paychecks’ dismay) surfing the web for all the free and entertaining music tidbits we can get our hands on. For those of you in the latter category who haven’t yet scored your fix for today, here are some starting points:
Are you one of those music fans who loves a visual element to go along with your all-American music (I know I’m a fan of picture books)? If your answer if, ‘By God, I do love pictures with my music!’, then check out this sweet four-part illustrated show review (sample shown above) by artist Ariel Kitch of Alela Diane and Blitzen Trapper playing at Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis. Seriously, this is an awesome concept – we need more sketch artists doing show reviews!
Ground control to Cat Power fans, this one’s for you. If you haven’t been flipping channels during TV commercials, you might have heard none other than Chan Marshall (AKA Cat Power) singing David Bowie‘s “Space Oddity” over a new ad for Lincoln’s 2009 MKS. So far, we’ve only got the clip available (below), but cross your fingers that this rendition ends up on another cover album from Marshall! Great choice…
Who says gossip isn’t good? It gives us more to write about! For the benefit of your supreme music knowledge (so you can know more random music factoids than your friends), here are the latest confirmed/denied rumors flying around out there:
First and foremost, let’s get David Bowie out of the way, because he’s been hogging the spotlight for too long already. In answer to the multitude of rumors being exchanged about the music icon, here is the quick-and-easy breakdown:
Bowie is not playing Coachella or reviving Ziggy Stardust.
Bowie may or may not be recording new material Berlin (he didn’t confirm or deny this, although the Twitter message was apparently a hoax).
Bowie does not have a Twitter account, according to his official website, so don’t trust any news reports that pop up from a Twitter impostor (that’s where these rumors were coming from).
If you’re a frequent internet music news surfer, you probably run into a lot of rumors, most of them based on one person’s hopefulness or assumptions. And you know what they say about assumptions…
Now you don’t want to to be an ass, and neither do we, so several times a week, Beatcrave will give you a quick list of recent rumors that have been denied or confirmed. Here’s the latest gab going around:
A British journal claimed today that David Bowie was in talks with organizers for the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival with regards to revival show of the rock legend’s Ziggy Stardust persona. However, NME contacted a Bowie spokesperson this morning and was told that the singer has no plans to play the festival this year. Too bad, but it has been confirmed that Coachella did bid for Bowie last year, so a non-Ziggy-Stardust performance might still be possible.
In other Coachella news, Faith No More frontman Mike Pattonshot down rumors today that the band will reform for this year’s desert bash in April. However, Patton did reveal that he would perform at the festival alongside beatboxer/rapper Rahzel in support of an upcoming collaboration album between the two artists. The album’s release date has yet to be confirmed, but we’re likely to get lengthy preview at Coachella this year. Heck, maybe they’ll even surprise us with some Faith No More remix cuts.
It’s been a while since I’ve watched this video but upon re-watching it I realized it looks like there was a awful lot of tension or something on this shoot…
Doesn’t it look like it? I don’t know if it was the cocaine, that they were secretly fucking, or what, but there had to have been something going on behind the scenes of this video.
Wow. MTV is officially cool again. In a rare case of unexplainable awesomeness, MTV has decided to post hundreds (thousands?) of music videos on a website for you to enjoy, embed, share, do whatever you want with! They’re just sitting there waiting for you! There is a wide variety of music, with everything from live shows to classic music videos. Plus, they’re all good quality! Much better than many of the music videos on YouTube. Although the site is a touch slower. So you’ll have decide what is more important to you.
