Negroes on Ice Negroes On Ice At Upright Citizens Brigade   Review

“Negroes on Ice,” the father-son sketch comedy music performed in the main by Prince Paul (De La Soul, Handsome Boy Modeling School) and son, P.Forreal, at Upright Citizens Brigade last night promised to equally offend all types of viewers. In short, the performance did just that, and did its share of amusing and disappointing. While the show is billed as a musical sketch comedy based on tales told by P.Forreal growing up, we hoped the performance would exhibit some level of comedic maturity. What it did do was offer a slew of hip hop and cinematic references and weave them into bizarre stories with impeccably timed sound effects (thanks to Dad, Prince Paul, on the tables).

Prince Paul (De La Soul, Handsome Boy Modeling School) is coming to Upright Citizens Brigade on January 15, 2012, with son P.Forreal. The two will perform, “Negroes On Ice,” their father-son sketch comedy musical based on tall tales P.Forreal told his dad as a child. Part DJ set and part theatre, the hip-hop musical is for an adult audience though it’s based on the juvenile musings of a young P.Forreal, also a rapper and DJ. The narrative slash musical slash comedy is sure to be entertaining and will definitely be unique.

As a prelude to the release of their third album, Plastic Beach, on March 9th, animated hotshots Gorillaz are previewing a new track from the album on their YouTube page. The oddball “Superfast Jellyfish” features De La Soul rhyming over verses broken up by hyper-poppy choruses led by Neon Neon’s Gruff Rhys that will likely satisfy/ excite loyal Gorillaz fans – there’s got to be some out there, right? Everyone else, however, may simply respond with a resounded “meh.”
