Lollapalooza 2010 kicked off with a bang! We got a great work out from walking from one end of the festival to the other but each trek was well-worth it for all the artists we got to see on the first day. Besides, Friday’s headliner was Lady Gaga. Not many people are going to forget that whether they were thinking, “I love her!” or “She’s just creepy” or “This is too weird.” (We actually heard people say these thoughts out loud, by the way!)
However, we want to focus on all the other great acts that just offered us all they had: The music. There’s a special connection between an audience member and a band member when he or she speaks into the microphone. They can thank us for watching but we’re really just thankful they’ve brought the sounds. They can make jokes and we’ll chuckle and have a moment even though there are hundreds surrounding us. Check Lollapalooza Day 1 through our eyes with the photos below!

Devo at Lollapalooza. If that wasn’t one of your reasons you came to Lolla in the first place, man! You must have had no idea what was in store for you. I expected certain things to happen during a Devo set purely because they are major icons in music history. Like I said before, it wasn’t only those flower-pot shaped hats that made them popular. The music speaks for itself and for 80s music (which can be so cliché), they rocked the hell out of their set today.

Devo is back on something of a roll lately – in addition to laying down a fiery, nerve-jittered live show at this year’s Coachella festival (one of the best sets of the weekend, by the way), the band is also releasing their first album of new music in ten years this month. The wryly titled Something for Everybody is set for release on June 15th on Warner Bros. Records. But, in case you are one of the hardcore converted, you can preview the new disc starting tomorrow.

You know, you’d think that a band as willfully weird—and nearly 40 years old—might have a tough time filling the gargantuan Mojave tent at midnight on Saturday night at Coachella. But then, one of the main thrusts of Devo’s work has always been the essential oddness of human beings, so it wasn’t much of surprise to see that the aging new wave/ punk band scored one of the most enthusiastic audiences of the entire festival. What was surprising? Much like Faith No More’s set, this oddball group of forward-looking sonic throwbacks nearly stole the entire festival.

If you’ve picked up a copy of Paste’s Great Expectations issue, you might have noticed Santigold linking arms with Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig. What’s more interesting about Santigold in the feature article (even more interesting than changing her name from Santogold to Santigold) is the fact she shares her reactions to people who always assume she does only R&B or Gospel genres because she’s a woman of color. However, she proves she is capable of more than mere assumptions by doing production for big names – big names like Devo.

Are you ready for some old school record action? This weekend marks the annual WFMU Record Fair in NYC. To celebrate, Warner Bros. Records is bringing vinyl to the people by hosting a booth you’ve got to check out.
Warner Bros. Records General Manager Tom Biery calls himself a vinyl freak and admits that there is not better place than the WFMU show to sell music directly to fans.
“I have been going to the show for years and have always thought that having a WBR/Reprise booth to sell our records would be a ton of fun as well as a great learning experience.”

Remember Devo? The unconventional band from the seventies and eighties who marched to the beat of their own drum? They’ve been given new shelf life thanks to the folks over at Warner Bros Records. According to Reuters, the band has signed a new deal with Warner’s (their original major label), in promotion of a series of concerts celebrating a pair of older albums.
