Dirty Projectors have always been known for the quirky yet detailed orchestrations that dabble in experimental indie rock. However, their status peaked when they released “Stillness Is the Move,” an r&b song in disguise. Despite the fact that they initially received flak for the soul-dipping tune, it went on to be their most popular song and among others in 2009. Their album, Bitte Orca, which the song was released on via Domino Records, made our Top 20 Albums of 2009 list so we were glad to finally see them on stage again. We may have driven all the way up the West Coast to finally see them live again but their out-of-the-box arrangements only seemed natural in the spacious lands that are Sasquatch Music Festival.

When everyone first heard Dirty Projectors‘ “Stillness Is the Move,” there were very mixed reactions to it. Some said that it was completely wild and refreshing for the Brooklyn group to dip into an R&B melody. Others were horrified that the band chose to release a song that echoed anything mainstream.
Either way, the song reached #1 in Brooklyn. Leading man, Dave Longstreth, who is known for mostly orchestrating very distinctive experimental sounds was very optimistic about the song as well but like most indie songs, it didn’t cross genre lines and into the mainstream realm as quickly as it could have.

The indie rock collective, Dirty Projectors, has always been eccentric in their songwriting and visual style. Led by Dave Longstreth, their sounds of distinguished lo-fi arrangements have included incredibly tight harmonies and intricate accompaniment. David Byrne has even taken notice of the group before the two artists collaborated together on “Knotty Pine,” a fan favorite.
“Stillness Is The Move,” goes above and beyond their usual sound with soaring R&B-like harmonies which rest upon foreign sounding guitar riffs and highly addictive beats. The track has been praised by several critics and although it branches out of typical indie rock, it is still quite experimental.

It’s always a pain when you’re really excited for your favorite artist or band to come to town only to find out that the show has been canceled. Reasons given are usually sickness, scheduling conflicts, or personal emergencies but it’s always somewhat of a letdown.
Concert-goers are usually told that either their tickets will be refunded or that the band will schedule a show later on in the year. All of this is usually okay, especially when the band members’ lives are in jeopardy. For instance, Pitchfork has reported that The Dirty Projectors had to cancel tonight’s show in Toronto because their van flipped over in Detroit, MI. Although members have been discharged from the hospital, the band has taken off tomorrow night’s show in Montreal off as well.
You can read The Dirty Projectors’ official statement below as well as take a poll in regards to your feelings about canceled shows.
