The buzzy—and very buzzed about—girl/ garage pop band the Dum Dum Girls have had a heady 2010: in addition to the releasing an excellent debut LP (I Will Be), the newly-formed band has been touring with the eternally excellent The Vaselines. Which makes the following news all the more depressing: according to Exclaim, the band has cancelled their tour and all upcoming dates.
Last week was a treat for those who find themselves giddy when it comes to indie lo-fi bands who borrow stylistic songwriting skills from the past. SoCal bands, Dum Dum Girls and Crocodiles, were set to play two LA shows and we made sure we caught the first show – which was, of course, sold out. The fact that it sold out didn’t surprise us and the fact that kids were still lining up outside The Echo still hoping to get in wasn’t shocking either. This was the kind of show to start your weekend out with even if it was still Thursday.
Love or hate these bands, as Pitchfork rightly reports, “indie rock tours in 2010 don’t come much bigger than this,” and it’s hard to argue with them: a North American headlining trek for Vampire Weekend, with support from Beach House and the Dum Dum Girls, is a savvy rock promoter’s dream, lacing together as it does VW’s collegiate and Caucasoid pseudo world-rock, Beach House’s glacial and gorgeous pop, and the roughed-up girl-group garage pop of the Dum Dum Girls. If you own a pair of skinny jeans, or think that you don’t look like an ass in that fedora, this tour’s for you.
