Fans of Elvis Costello in Israel are probably bummed, and in some circles downright angry, now that the singer-songwriter has shown his hand in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and decided to cancel two shows scheduled for later this summer at the Caesarea Amphitheater in Tel Aviv.

In a statement on his official website, he wrote, “It is after considerable contemplation that I have lately arrived at the decision that I must withdraw from the two performances.”

It’s a conversation between London and New Jersey. The infamous singer-songwriter Elvis Costello sat down with the legendary rocker Bruce Springsteen on his show Spectacle: Elvis Costello with… The attention was geared toward Springsteen’s inspirations, his time on the Jersey Shore, and his humble beginnings.

The audience was filled with seasoned faces, all of whom were eager to see The Boss perform a song. After Springsteen talked about his road to stardom and made references to Bob Dylan, Costello asked him to play “Wild Billy’s Circus Story.” Costello, accompanied by Nils Lofgren and Roy Brittan (on accordion), played the song harmoniously, it was definitely one of the highlights of the night.

By most accounts last year’s debut season of Sundance Channel’s music/interview show Spectacle: Elvis Costello with… was pretty damn good. Not without fault, but still a refreshing venue to observe an eclectic line-up of talented artists speak about their craft and play some music. The premier episode with Elton John (an exec producer on the series) performing with Costello on David Ackles “Down River” was a definite highlight.

So now season 2 kicks off December 9 (10 p.m.) with it a new and impressive list of guests to chitchat with Costello. Neko Case! Springsteen! Levon Helm!

Looks like Spectacle is fast becoming the ‘it’ place to be on TV for musicians.
