2009 was a great year in music, and we hope you enjoyed what it’s brought you. There’s been a wealth in reissues and limited edition releases, but new full-lengths will always be a thrill for music fiends like us.
So we count down the best albums of the year. Although there have been some great EPs and singles, this list includes only full-length albums that have been released in the US. Check our top 20 out below and let us know what you think!

Is Florence Welch of Florence + The Machine out to take place of Jenny Lewis when it comes to our favorite red head? It’s highly possible. Not only has the album, Lungs, been one of the most refreshing albums of 2009 so far, but Flo and the band have put on incredible performances on stage and in their music videos.
Although the leading lady is known to belt and croon in percussion-heavy folk-pop tunes, you’ll hear that “Kiss With A Fist” has one of the more fun choruses built in.
She does a “Robyn” type of thing to add her own drumming into the performance as well. Check it out below!

Mercury Prize nominee, Florence + The Machine, have released one of the best albums of 2009 so far with Lungs and all of their accompanying videos have been just as enticing as their arrangements.
Their latest video for “You’ve Got The love” has leading lady, Florence Welch, strutting Kylie Minogue style in a sparkle-crusted moon while her audience seems to be taking part in a New Years-type soiree. Her outfit is a little more risque than what she’s worn in the past, but the girl knows how to work it. Who says blonds have more fun?
Check it out below and let us know what you think!

Having just recently released their debut full-length album, Florence and The Machine are already making a quick trip to the top of the UK music scene. Released on 6 July 2009, “Lungs” escalated all the way to number 2 on the UK charts, just behind the incomparable Michael Jackson. Voiced by the sultry/sassy/superb Florence Welch and backed by the “machine” of some spectacular musicians, Florence and The Machine are producing a noise that genially combines the richness of soul and that unmistakeably “indie” rawness.
Her sound is so genius, in fact, that Florence and The Machine have just been announced as a Mercury Prize nominee, sharing the honor with such breakouts as Bat for Lashes and La Roux (an artist who was also recently inducted into our BeatCrave Fav series). We are happy to honor Florence and The Machine with our own kudos by naming her today’s BeatCrave Fav. So, take a moment and enjoy the sweet, sweet music!

The Mercury Music Prize shortlist nominations are in, and indie artists have taken over! Usually dominated by mainstream artists, 2009’s shortlist nominations include some of our favorite artists. The dreamy Bat For Lashes is nominated for her prolific Two Suns, Florence and The Machine (tomorrow’s BeatCrave Fav) is nominated for her powerful album, Lungs, our favorite androgynous duo, La Roux (and another one of our BeatCrave Favs) is nominated for their self-titled album, and of course, Glasvegas is in the mix!
The Mercury Music Prize is an annual music prize awarded for the best album from the United Kingdom or Ireland. Each year 12 artists are chosen and are heavily promoted for their nominated album and one artist wins the glorious amount of £20,000. The Mercury Prize has a reputation for “being awarded to outside chances rather than the favorites,” but we couldn’t be happier with the short list nominees this year. See the list with all 12 artists below!

As we’ve mentioned to our BeatCrave readers before, Diditleak started an account on twitter and on it you can find songs or albums that have leaked from different artists. An impatient fans heaven! Here are a few of the entries from this week:
From the hip-hop producer turned emcee, Alchemist who has worked with the finest in the hip-hop community (Snoop Dogg, Prodigy, Mobb Deep) to soul indie band, Florence and The Machine. =Any artist is in danger of having their music leaked on the site. Let’s see who becomes victim next week.
Have you gotten your hands on any of the music yet? What do you think?

The BRIT Awards, the UK’s version of our Grammys (only more xenophobic with separate categories for the British and for foreigners) were held yesterday in London. Also unlike the Grammys, the BRIT Awards do not give out lifetime achievement awards in the form of making one person the winner of every single big category for that one year (i.e. Robert Plant, Herbie Hancock, Ray Charles, Steely Dan, Santana, etc.), they like to spread them out. Duffy was this year’s big winner, picking up three major awards. The Pet Shop Boys won the official lifetime achievement award. Surprisingly the UK’s own, Coldplay walked away empty handed. Who would have thought?
Check out the full list of winners below:
