All right, here it goes – time flying by uber fast, that is. After this weekend, January is basically over, which will soon mean candy hearts, teddy bears, and fancy dinners for whoever it is that holds residency in that special place in your heart. And if that someone is actually someone else this year, we say go ahead and owe yourself one before the pressure gets to be too much. If not, well then, business as usual. Experimental, ambient, pop, punk, folk… night out, anyone? Check out our picks of the weekend below:

Fol Chen (previously featured as a BeatCrave Fav and the winner of our Fav poll) is definitely one of the main bands to see at SXSW. Their music is new, inspired, and intriguing to see live. Instead of telling you what they’re about and playing such a huge festival like SXSW, I’ll let the bands leader, Samuel Bing tell you their story.
Check out what Bing had to say about playing SXSW below…

If you’re heading down to good ol’ Austin, TX for SXSW this week and you haven’t arrived yet, get reading to hit the ground running. I’m an Austinite myself (yes, that is our title), so I know the city back-to-front, but it’s always difficult to prepare for the throngs of people clogging the downtown streets.
Air travel was a nightmare (Dallas- Fort Worth’s airport was an anxiety-ridden scene of stranded South by Southwesters), and traffic on the freeway slowed me down even further, but once I finally joined the mob on Red River Street for Day 1 (March 18th), the feeling of joy was immeasurable…
After grabbing my wristband from the Austin Convention Center, I followed the sweet sounds of power-pop to one of Austin’s trendiest clubs, Beauty Bar. Since it was only a tad before 10 p.m., the line moved quickly, and soon I was soaking up the New Wave-infused glory of Fol Chen (above), who delivered their brand of (usually) production-heavy pop-rock with an erratic punk-rock twist.

Live from Beauty Bar in Austin Tx, Fol Chen gave us rhythms to dance to, beats to bang your head to and even kicked it old school with some Mariah Carey. Definitely a great band to check out for some good times.

This is certainly a unique interpretation of the song “Cable TV.” Who is expecting Spear’s style, hoochie mama dancers in Fol Chen‘s music video? Certainly not me! But they’re there! Although they use them in such a unique way and they are “indie” sexy with those scarves on.
The video uses a type of stop-frame style, that I’ve been seeing a lot lately. Whether it’s animated or not, pauses seem to be quite popular.
Check out the new music video below…

Recently featured as a BeatCrave Fav (vote for them this Friday!) Fol Chen has just released another video through Asthmatic Kitty for their video for “No Wedding Cake.” The video is not only original, but it’s also an uplifting change from their other music, showing that they are capable experimenting with a spectrum of different types of sounds.
