If you’re looking for a fresh new punk rock band from the Jersey area, Screaming Females should be on the top of your list for listening. Shortly after we witnessed The Blow attempt to save her set at FYF Fest, there were a lot of us that continued to push to the front of the stage for the upcoming trio.
In return for faithfully waiting like the good fans we are, Screaming Females saved us from any type of disappoint or regret. Any three-piece band who who captured our full attention during the first song with a sound that was that organic was fine by us!

Because of the long lines at FYF Fest‘s entrance, I unfortunately missed out on some great opening acts such as Magic Kids and The Growlers. However, as soon as I was able to get past security, I quickly made my to the Sequoia stage to catch Mikhaela Maricich aka The Blow.
Now, Marichich is essentially the foundation The Blow. However, fans found out too late that seeing The Blow live without Jonah (who had left the group to focus on his band, Y.A.C.H.T.), is a very different experience than listening to K Record’s beloved release of Paper Television.

FYF Fest was back for the Labor Day weekend all Saturday and, of course, we were there to capture as much of it as we could for you! We still stand by our beliefs and consider FYF Fest the best LA summer festival but there were definitely some changes that were and weren’t there for the better. However, we’ll tell you all about that in our concluding review a little bit later.
Right now, we want to give you a little sneak peak into what we experienced at FYF Fest 2010. To start out, we’ll let you see the festival through our eyes once again through our photo gallery below. Take a look at our live photos of bands such as !!!, The Rapture, Dead Man’s Bones, Local Natives, Warpaint, Wavves, Best Coast, Titus Andronicus and more!

It’s almost that time of year! FYF Fest (formerly just FYF) and Labor Day are just around the corner and you can bet money we’ll be there covering all the great music for you again this year! (We really like festivals here.) The creators of FYF first brought their massive DIY summer festival outdoors last year and we thought they did a pretty great job – minus the lack of hand sanitizer and a long excruciating wait in a slow line. However, we hear those who suffered in last year’s line received a pretty sweet consolation mixtape.
This year, they’ve really outdone themselves as they’ve booked an even better lineup for 2010. Headliners include The Rapture, Panda Bear (of Animal Collective), and Dead Man’s Bones. Plus, our beloved Los Angeles-based Local Natives recently became a last minute addition. Here’s your chance to see a day’s worth of rad bands. We’re giving away two pairs of tickets! Find out who else is playing the festival, but most importantly, how to enter the contest after the jump!

It took a lot of guts for the masterminds of F Yeah Fest (its old name) to undergo such a massive expansion this year. With as much volunteer help as they could get, I’m certain the festival’s creators were sleep deprived as they took the annual event out of The Echo and The Echoplex and into the wide open spaces of LA Historic State Park this past Saturday.
With an effort like this for the first time, there was bound to be some ups and downs, some mistakes and lessons, and some major clean-up to do afterward. Our suggestions for next year? 1) More clarification for which lines to go in at the ticket booth 2) Portable sinks outside the port-o-potties so we can wash our hands 3) More napkins! and 4) More trash cans! Now that we’ve said that, on to the good part: Despite previously mentioned and minor details – Congratulations, FYF Fest, for actually pulling off one of the best local festivals in LA history.

After hearing about how these boys can cause quite the trouble, we expected Black Lips to go crazy as the headliner for FYF Fest. However, it wasn’t until toward the end of their set that we really go to see the wild side of this band. We love it when band members stage dive… with their guitars!
Check out the last set of the night below!

Before Ida No officially took the stage, we could see she was stretching in her cheetah print pants. Why was she stretching? Maybe because Glass Candy‘s sets are always one huge dance party! Purple and turquoise balloons in the air, dancing maniacs jumping over the barriers, and more made it one huge workout!
Check it all out in our photos below!

The girls of Telepathe like the lights down low with their hypnotic beats. Just before they asked the lighting crew to dim down the lights one last time, BeatCrave got a few great shots for you from FYF Fest!
Check them out after the jump!
