It’s been a fairly good week of releases, and we’ve come to notice a path that artists are choosing: working on new material and new sounds. It’s impressive to watch their careers unfold into a different sound altogether while still holding strong to where their roots are. Even the “bad” releases this week showed us some (but not that impressive) growth, making this week’s list an interesting mix:

Renowned mashup artist, Girl Talk (aka biomedical engineering nerd Gregg Gillis before he gave up health insurance) released his latest and fifth album, All Day, online for free today. The free part is not a surprise since Gillis also released his previous album, Feed the Animals, for basically free.
However, this time you can just head on over to his labels site, Illegal Art, and click on the a link to download the album. There are no multiple choice questions about your reasons for paying $0. You simply just have to decide if you want to download the album with all the tracks as separate mp3s or as one entire stream. Gillis states that he intended that All Day be listened to as a whole but he did divide individual tracks for easier navigation – which makes sense with our ADD-one track music purchasers these days. More details below!

Hot on the heels of his successful album, Night Ripper, mash-up DJ, Girl Talk, released his latest album Feed the Animals with a “Pay What You Want” choice. It made sense since his label is named Illegal Art, and most people justified his samples under “Fair Use” with the pay what you want model by paying zero dollars (after answering a multiple choice question for why you were paying that amount).
Now, Girl Talk (aka Greg Gillis) has announced that all his previous albums will also be sold under the pay what you want model starting on January 8. This includes Night Ripper and his two work-in-progress albums, Secret Diary and Unstoppable.

Attention festivalphiles of the world: If you don’t have 4th of July Weekend plans yet, reserve a spot on your calendar. Michigan’s Rothbury music festival will return for its 2nd annual event July 2-5 at the Doulbe JJ Ranch and Resort to bring you a genuine slice of jam-band heaven.
With headliners The Dead (playing their only summer date), Bob Dylan and His Band, The String Cheese Incident and Willie Nelson, it’s clear that Rothbury will take the forefront of hippie-rock-revival shows so far this year (sorry Bonnaroo, you got Phish, but Dylan and The Dead just set a new bar). The headliners might appeal primarily to an older crowd, but the fest has much more to offer…
If you’re a little younger and hip with the times, no worries. This year’s lineup features a variety of contemporary genres, from indie groups like Guster and Broken Social Scene to hip-hop and dance acts like Girl Talk and Chromeo. Here’s the full lineup:

Yay! Pitchfork Musical Festival 2009 is coming! Their website has announced July 17th – 19th as their official dates for the 2009 festival. Although the line-up hasn’t been announced yet, it should be pretty good based on the last two years. (Sonic Youth and Public Enemy? Hell yeah.) Pitchfork Music Festival is held in Chicago’s Union Park with just three stages. There are fewer stages but the line-up is rarely a let down. So for those of you who enjoy the smaller festivals, it may be the the one this summer! Tickets go on sale March 13th.
Check out these videos from last year’s festival via Pitchfork.TV below!

After Radiohead offered an opportunity for fans to “pay what you want” in regards to their In Rainbows CD, there were a lot of reactions ranging from shock to joy. Later on, more artists such as Girl Talk decided to let their fans determine how much they wanted to donate as well. (Although if you chose to pay $0, Girl Talk’s Feed the Animals host, illegal-art.net, inquired why with a multiple choice question.) The option seemed to work for Radiohead since they immediately sold 1.2 million copies online, and fans still continued to buy physical copies afterward.
However, The Cure‘s Robert Smith has deemed this option to be foolish because it allows the fans to put a value on the artist’s work. Is this business model fundamentally wrong as he says? Or does it not matter because it makes it more convenient for fans? Let us know what you think!

Fat Tuesday (AKA Mardi Gras, AKA Carnival) is the celebratory day before Lent. This day is the last day to freely and without regret get all of those sinful desires out of your system before having to behave for forty days straight. For those who can’t celebrate the festivities in style by attending one of the many parties occurring across the nation, BeatCrave is bringing the Top 5 songs of sinful celebration to you. Whether it is the Kings of Leon crooning about sex, CSS jamming about alcohol, the absurdly ridiculous, yet equally enjoyable, Fast Food Rockers babbling about food, K’s Choice singing about drugs or the king of the party, or Girl Talk mashing up about partying, we’ve got all your dirty bases covered.
So bring those skeletons out from your closet and enjoy this day of bad before you have to be good… Continue Reading
