It’s official: U2 have confirmed they will play at this year’s Glastonbury Festival. In a video speech at the 2011 NME awards in London, BBC News reports that The Edge announced that the band would headline the Pyramid Stage on June 24, which is a Friday night.
U2 were set to play last year’s festival, but plans were shelved when Bono injured his back. Their much anticipated show this year will be the band’s debut at the festival at Worthy Farm in Pilton, Somerset. Coldplay and Beyonce have already been announced as the other two headliners.

Proving that their festival headliners can be just as underwhelming and obvious as we Yanks and our desert fests, NME reports that U2 and Beyonce are set to headline this year’s Glastonbury festival with Coldplay in England.

We’re almost a week removed from Gorillaz headlining performance at Glastonbury, where Damon Albarn and his cartoon band were asked to fill in for U2 who canceled due to Bono’s bad back. It’s tough for anyone to match a ‘U2-style’ show, but Gorillaz mixed exciting visuals and a damn fine roster of all-star guests to jazz up the performance.
The Clash’s Mick Jones and Paul Simonon, Snoop Dogg, Shaun Ryder, De La Soul, Bobby Womack, The Fall’s Mark E Smith, Bashy and Kano all joined Gorillaz on Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage last Friday (June 25). But it was Lou Reed who made headlines when it was announced he’d share the stage with Albarn and Co.

Snoop Dogg and Willie Nelson are BFFs. This is not really news since most of us know they both share an abundant love for marijuana and have in fact also shared a stage in Europe before – with Snoop smoking several joints on stage, of course. Each artist comes from a very different background and genre but are actually quite close in real life. They first met while they each on their separate tours in Amsterdam as revealed in a conversation Nelson had Sky News:

Update: Watch Lou Reed perform with Gorillaz at Glastonbury!
Who knows, maybe they’ll break out a Velvet Underground song or two. While that would be super awesome, though unlikely, it’s still going to be a treat to see Gorillaz joined by Lou Reed onstage during their Glastonbury set tomorrow night (June 25).
Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett’s cartoon band will headline the festival’s Pyramid Stage, and the duo is expected to be visited onstage by not only Reed, but other Plastic Beach guest stars including Mos Def, Kano, Bashy, Snoop Dogg and Shaun Ryder.

Due to Bono’s back surgery last week — you don’t think it gets any easier to carry the weight of the world and that ego once you’re over the hill, do you? — U2 has been forced to postpone or cancel several upcoming gigs, including a headlining slot in England’s Glastonbury festival. Glastonbury’s response? Replace one increasingly cartoonish band with a literal cartoon band: Gorillaz.
