Green Day jco 4 13 11 e1302716919745 American Idiot Headed to the Big Screen?

Green Day never seemed like the kind of band that would release a rock opera; that’s the type of thing that prententious 70s prog rock groups do, not slacker punks, right? Well as we all know, American Idiot turned out to be a massive success, lending its story and songs to a Broadway play of the same name. Now, according to Billboard, Hollywood has decided its high time the musical be made into a movie.

greendayjcoJan11 Green Day To Release New Live Album

Green Day has certainly been enjoying their new lease on life. It’s easy to forget that after releasing “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)”, more than a few fans read that song as the band’s farewell to the rock star life, and for a while we all assumed they were another forgotten 90s band. Hard to imagine, now that they’ve become an arguably bigger pop presence than ever before, with two of the most popular rock albums of the decade to their name and a Broadway musical based on their work earning rave reviews.

Intent to never show signs of stopping again, the band released a trailer online on Monday, January 20, to announce the impending release of a new live album from the group, Spinner reports.

The Decemberists In Talks To Write Musical With ‘American Idiot’ Director

The Decemeberists Get R.E.M.s Peter Buck To Play On New Album The Decemberists In Talks To Write Musical With American Idiot Director

Well, if worked for Green Day, and then U2 (Kidding! Kidding!), maybe it will work for The Decemberists too.  NME reports that the Portland indie-proggers may be the next rock band to take on Broadway by writing a musical—which kind of makes sense, in that the band’s theatrical music seems far more suited for the stage than, say, the band who wrote “American Idiot” or a U2 musical about a teenager bitten by a radioactive spider and who fights a goblin.

Apparently Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong got a kick out of performing in the Broadway musical version of his band’s American Idiot album (God help us), as, according to Billboard, he has signed on for 50 more performances (ok, He’s not helping us).

Metric CP 8 7 2010a Lollapalooza 2010 Photo Gallery: Day 2

Lollapalooza‘s first day may have had Lady Gaga, but day 2 was jam packed with artists whether you were a huge electronica head, an indie rocker or Bayside ska kid. We knew we definitely had our day cut out for us but with Grant Park’s massive size for a festival, we must have walked miles as we rushed to see band after band.

Some big names that got us warmed up for the night’s headliners included Stars, Metric, Grizzly Bear, AFI, Spoon and more. We were able to support our Los Angeles bands such as Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, The Soft Pack (San Diego’s close enough), Dawes and more as well. However, the night ended with fireworks during Green Day, Phoenix and Empire of the Sun. Take a look at our day in photos below!

Lollapalooza 2010: Green Day

Green Day CP 8 7 2010b1 Lollapalooza 2010: Green Day

The punk rockers from Berkeley, Green Day, took over the South End of Grant Park on Saturday with their headlining spot on the Parkways Foundation stage for Lollapalooza. Known for their antics, many in the front rows questioned what these guys would do with more than two hours of playing time.  To answer that question, before the band even took the stage a certain frontman in a pink bunny suit wandered around the stage drinking some beers and flipping everyone the bird.

If this wasn’t the perfect intro, then you obviously haven’t been to a Green Day show.

Well, it’s that time of year again, in which we all flood towards Chicago for all the same bands we saw at Coachella now Rubiks-cubed with a handful of other acts and headliners for three days of music, humidity, and wildly overpriced bottled water and pizza.  It’s time for Lollapalooza 2010.

And while Beatcrave will be offering up a list of the Top 5 bands you must see at this year’s Lolla, I thought I’d slip you a handy primer of the five bands you must avoid at all costs if you’d like to have a pleasant time in Chicago this weekend (and if you have good taste).  From hipster blog golden calves to appallingly plastic pop divas to ’90s rock jokes, these are the bands whose sets you can miss in order to nap, grab a slice of $20 pizza, or take an annoying picture of yourself in crowd with a band onstage behind you for your Facebook profile pic.  Just remember — you’ve been warned.
