SXSW Music Day 3: Cedar Street Courtyard Showcase With Peter Bjorn and John, Grizzly Bear, and Dinosaur Jr.

SXSW Music Day 3: Cedar Street Courtyard Showcase With Peter Bjorn and John, Grizzly Bear, and Dinosaur Jr.

According to some fans, day three of the SXSW music conference was referred to as ‘Metallica Day’ – and yes, the metal legends did take the stage at Stubb’s BBQ for a 90-minute greatest hits set to help sell their new game ‘Guitar Hero: Metallica.’

But for others (like myself) who didn’t make it in to the industry-dominated showcase, day three was more like ‘So-Much-For-Metallica Day.’ And with lines around the block at Emo’s and many of the other well known venues, it was the same story at many of the showcases for anyone without a badge.

But musical magic was still to be found at Cedar Street Courtyard on W. 4th Street, where I slipped right in and camped out for an evening of indie rock that culminated into an extraordinary shred-show with indie/alternative legends Dinosaur Jr.

grizzly Upcoming Releases: Grizzly Bear, Mr. Oizo, Au Revoir Simone

  • Warp Records will release the third Grizzly Bear LP, entitled Veckatimest, on May 25/26th, nearly two-and-a-half years since their defining album, Yellow House. The band has a busy schedule in 2009, with appearances at SXSW and Bonnaroo. The album’s title is the name of a small island on the Massachusetts coast, and guitarist Ed Drost told Pitchfork that despite previous collaborations on the Friends EP, this new effort is just the four members of the band. Here’s the tracklist, mark your calendars!
  • Acclaimed electronica artist Mr. Oizo, of “yellow puppet” fame, will have his Pourriture EP out on Ed Banger Records on March 16th, after his 2008 album Lambs Anger. Brushing shoulders with other artists at Ed Banger, like Justice, Dj Mehdi and Sebastian, the heavy electro-beats from Mr. Oizo are sure to bring chaos to dancefloors around the world. Watch out for the release, and check out his Myspace for tour dates in Australia and Europe. Continue Reading

 Pitchfork Music Festival 2009 Dates!

Yay! Pitchfork Musical Festival 2009 is coming! Their website has announced July 17th – 19th as their official dates for the 2009 festival. Although the line-up hasn’t been announced yet, it should be pretty good based on the last two years. (Sonic Youth and Public Enemy? Hell yeah.) Pitchfork Music Festival is held in Chicago’s Union Park with just three stages. There are fewer stages but the line-up is rarely a let down. So for those of you who enjoy the smaller festivals, it may be the the one this summer! Tickets go on sale March 13th.

Check out these videos from last year’s festival via Pitchfork.TV below!

lostmusic09 2 19 LOST in Indie Rock Which Indie Rockers Would Play Lost Characters

Remember in high school when your English teacher would make you write compare and contrast essays?  Well, for some reason I always tried to sneak just a comparison paper by her – I hated writing the contrast part.  Something about how if two things are inherently different, its more fun to find similarities than to point out the obvious differences. I love comparing books to movies, movies to TV shows, apples to oranges (they’re both round) – hell, whatever comes to mind.  This article is aimed at taking my two favorite things in the world and smashing them together: LOST and music.

fiveanimals09 2 05 Indie Rocks 5 Most Overused Animal Names

Bands named after animals are nothing new.  Some of the greatest bands of all time took their name from the animal kingdom.  And The Eagles did too!  But in recent years, indie bands in particular have shown a special sort of fascination with beastly band names.  And when it comes time to pick those names, they turn to these five animals more than any others…
