If there was ever any doubt that “American Idol” is entirely capable of making stars of its contestants even if they don’t win the competition, Jennifer Hudson silenced the skeptics. Coming in seventh place during the 2004 season, the young singer still managed to launch a successful career that has led to impressive record sales and a noteworthy role in the movie Dreamgirls. Hudson shows no signs of stopping her ascent to superstardom, announcing that her new album is set for a March release.

Last night was the big night for the music industry. The 52nd Grammy Awards were held in Los Angeles’ Staples Center and everyone from Justin Beiber to Jeff Beck showed up for the special event. Also, like usual, they managed to cram in 16 performances into a three hour show.
Although, we have to admit, with the exception of Lady Gaga, Beyonce, The 3-D Michael Jackson tribute, and Mary J. Blige/Andrea Bocelli duet, the show didn’t live up to the hype last night. Whether you tuned in or missed out last night, we’ve got all the performances for you to watch below!

Michelle Obama is doing all she can to promote the arts from the White House and we applaud her efforts. Earlier in the year, she emphasized how important music education was with her night of classical music held in the White House. However, with February coming up and having Black History Month hitting more at home with her family, next month will feature musical artists from all genres singing songs about civil rights.

After being named Humanitarian of 2002 and frequently named as one of the most influential women in the world, Oprah is not known for being stingy. This woman continues to give and give. However, she unfortunately announced The Oprah Show will be coming to an end in 2011.

You may have been surprised when you discovered that Jennifer Hudson sang over a backing tape at this year’s Super Bowl, but most live, internationally televised musical performances count on pre-recordings to avoid technical problems on air.
Hank Neuberger, supervisor of the broadcast audio for the Grammy Awards telecast, told the Chicago Tribune:
“The Super Bowl performances are all on tape. There is no way you can set up a full band in five minutes with microphones, get all the settings right and expect to get quality sound. The Super Bowl has been doing that for years with virtually all the bands.”

- Merl Saunders of the Grateful Dead has passed away.
- Hinder now has a Jagermeister machine in their tour bus. Let the drinking… continue?
- Cobra Starship has remixed Fall Out Boy’s “I Don’t Care“. Do you care?
- Members of Mest have formed The Twilight and the Sound. This kind of makes me wonder if they named their band after the movie to garner attention.
