pepperrabbit Concert Picks: Pepper Rabbit, La Big Vic, Joanna Newsom...

What better way to say farewell to July and give a big, sloppy welcome back kiss to August than with a weekend full of shows? Take your pick from our carefully selected picks below.

  • Pepper Rabbit | Friday, July 30 | 8:30 pm | 21+ | $8 | Spaceland, Los Angeles, CA – Map | With a slight musical disposition that in part would go well in the background of a Charlie Chaplin flick, the Los Angeles-based (Silver Lake, specifically) “wing it ’til it rocks” trio takes the basics of indie and old school and makes it flippin’ fabulous. Almost re-defining experimental music with a pliable, multi-applicable twist, this will be the last of two shows until the autumn months – when they’ll resume shows for apparently no better reason than to delight us to the core. We can so live with that. With Candy Claws and Lonely Trees – Buy Tickets

JN TW 5 10 10 Joanna Newsom Calls Madonna A Dumbass And Lady Gaga Arty Spice

Pitchfork reports that indie folkster Joanna Newsom came out swinging in a recent interview with The Guardian, lambasting two female musicians whose dedication to image, in her opinion, completely supersedes their ability to actually make listenable music.  Or, as she puts it, Lady Gaga’s music is all “glowsticks” and “Madonna’s a dumb-ass”:

Joanna Newsom has made a mighty comeback with her triple disc album, Have One On Me, which has already been critically acclaimed by numerous music publications such as both the New York and Los Angeles Times. Although she only peaked at 75, her cult following has bought more than 700,000 copies of her album in the first week of her release making it a big win for her mark as an indie artist. In celebration and in support of the album, the singer-songwriter stopped by Late Night With Jimmy Fallon to perform her song, “Soft As Chalk.”

Poll: Do You Support Indie Music In Commercials? Poll: Do You Support Indie Music In Commercials?

Now that radio stations have become almost useless, TV has become the new radio. What was considered a faux-pas a decade ago is now widely accepted. Great Northern‘s song, “Home” was recently featured in a 2009 Nissan Murano ad, Silversun Pickups‘ “Well Thought Out Twinkles” was placed in another car commercial for Pontiac a couple of years ago, and now – Joanna Newsom‘s “Sprout and Bean” plays softly in the background for Victoria’s Secret new Dream push-up bra ad.

There have only been a pair of commercials that have irked me. The first one was Bob Dylan looking creepy in a Victoria’s Secret ad a few years ago; it was just too weird of a combination. The second one involved of Montreal changing their lyrics from “Let’s pretend we don’t exist” to “Let’s go outback tonight” for Outback Steakhouse. Otherwise, TV as the new radio has benefited musicians very well with viewers like myself – especially in the indie genre. Who could forget how popular Feist and The Submarines got after their team-up with the iPod and iPhone? What do you think? Vote below and then watch the commercials after the jump!

Poll: Old People Review Today’s Music – Awesome or Crazy?

Wednesday, March 11, 2009 12:00PM - By

Remember when you were a teenager and you wanted to listen to music you liked in the car, but your parents absolutely vetoed that option? Parents are so uncool. Well, get a load of this! Three elderly residents of Fishtown, Philadelphia have created a show where they review music of today’s generation (The Thermals, Joanna Newsom, The Decemberists, Clipse, and more) at a diner called Sulimay’s, thus giving their series the title “Breakfast at Sulimay’s.” In this clip, they review Young Jeezy and Animal Collective and I can’t decide if it’s hilarious or completely insane. You may be surprised at Ann approving the rapper, as she points out the “intro” and “assassination” components, yet displaying her distaste for repetitious electronic riffs. Highlights are Joe’s implication of Young Jeezy’s “Black Dreams” putting shame to the African American race and his blatant plug for Girl Scout Cookies as they introduce Animal Collective’s “My Girls.” Watch the clip for yourself, and tell us what you think!
