In an age where most FM radio is driven by the same kind of lowest-common-denominator corporate programming that determines what Lady Gaga song get played at the mall, it’s nice to know that stations like L.A.’s KCRW still exist to champion the work of skilled artists and help listeners find some new groups they may not be familiar with.

On top of that, the station has a knack for getting bands to stop by and record tunes for them, and while most of the time, this results in an enjoyable but run-of-the-mill live session, every now and then, a gem is produced.

Kirsten Dunst Featured On Guest DJ Project Kirsten Dunst Featured On Guest DJ Project

Whether or not you like Kirsten Dunst as an actress is one thing, but it looks as if we can all agree the star of such films as Spider Man and Bring it On has good taste in music.

We know this because the actress recently dropped by Los Angeles radio station KCRW to spin some tunes as part of the Guest DJ Project. The five-song set from Dunst is definitely strong start to finish, each a fine choice for your ‘love & loss’ file of songs.

Check out Kirsten Dunst’s radio set-list below!

Tron Talk Director Joseph Kosinski Talks About Daft Punk And Music With Jason Bentley Tron Talk: Director Joseph Kosinski Talks Daft Punk And Music With Jason Bentley

Earlier today at Apogee’s Berkeley Street Studios in Santa Monica, CA, KCRW hosted a Tron: Legacy listening party event which featured world renowned DJ Jason Bentley as the host and Tron‘s director Joseph Kosinski as their special guest. For an intimate gathering in a cozy-sized room, the in-depth conversation was quite powerful as the film is expected to be when it hits theaters.

For a little over an hour, we got a brief sense of what it was like behind the scenes in regards to the making of the film’s score as well as Kosinski’s love for electronic music – specifically, Daft Punk. We were also lucky enough to feast our ears on five specific music cues  – each played in their entirety – giving us an imaginary glimpse into the world of Tron through our audio senses.

Femi vs. KCRW Soundclash: The Review

Wednesday, March 4, 2009 11:00AM - By

kcrw09 1 30 Femi vs. KCRW Soundclash: The ReviewFemi vs. KCRW Soundclash” is a strange, yet extremely engaging album. In order to understand this album as it is, you must look at its details. The songs here are remixed versions of tracks by Afrobeat forerunner, Femi Kuti (son of Fela Kuti). What KCRW, the Santa Monica based public radio station, does with the songs is hand them over to a few of their key DJs and lets them re-imagine the songs. The music does not suffer from this; rather it grows in a different direction. By the end of it, you realize that these are no longer the songs that Femi wrote; they have become a brainchild of the respective DJ.
