Lady Sovereign was detained in Australia over the weekend after she spat at a nightclub doorman. According to Spinner, Lady Sovereign arrived in the country Friday to perform the next day at the Parklife Festival Tour. After pounding back a few at the popular Brisbane-area gay nightclub Beat, she was arrested for an altercation with the nightclub doorman.
Last month we posted our favorite 16 bands and then you pick your favorite. Our winner… Lady Sovereign.
Born Louise Amanda Harman (Dec. 19, 1985), Lady Sovereign grew up in the tough streets of Northwest London’s Chalkhill Estate. Through her years of perseverance, she has made her mark and indentation in the grime music scene. For those of you who are not familiar with what grime is exactly, it is a music genre that began in London in the wake of the new millennium. This genre includes a mix of vast musical styling, such as punk, rap, and hip-hop. Sovereign’s participation in this genre came as a surprise to many, being that she is not only female, but white as well. Through her career she has had to defend herself from skeptical peers and critics.
The people have spoken! You have all voted on your favorite BeatCrave Fav band of March ’09. And the winner was Lady Sovereign! We will feature Mp3s, a bio, and (if your lucky) an interview. I know you can barely contain yourselves. Look forward to that, later this week. In the meantime, you can check out some videos and tourdates below…

Lady Sovereign is a bit unconventional by standards typical to the hip-hop genre – a fair-skinned, petite, twenty-something female who doesn’t push out her chest or wear barely-there skirts, she’s not the one in music videos being played up as expendable arm candy. Rather, she dons what she likes and is verbally/rhythmically as balls-y as her male counterparts.
Her “I’m likable, but feel free to be intimidated” attitude is thick and her lyrics are sharp, served with an edge of the Grime music genre. On general physical terms she can be described as a British female Eminem, but with not-so-general intent they can still be compared as having broken molds and shifted perceptions of what hip-hop should look like. The best thing about her is that she is so self-explanatory (unfortunately, when capturing her in words, it can also be not so wonderful a thing). As an MC, Lady Sovereign can speak for herself. She is a force to be reckoned within her genre and wherever else she sees fit.
Check her out below, and if you dig such un-assumed outspokenness and razor sharp edge as much as I do, vote for her in Friday’s poll! Continue Reading

In December, English grime rapper Lady Sovereign released the above music video and has just announced that she will be releasing her her second studio attempt, “Jigsaw,” on April 6. Sov is already reasserting her gritty style in her music video for the album’s first single, “I Got You Dancing” which you can download or stream below…

Lady Sovereign has released a new video for her track “I Got You Dancing.” The video is inspired by the 1979 cult classic “The Warriors” which definitely adds a pretty neat aspect to the video (I had almost completely forgotten that movie existed).
Check out the video after the break. If you like the track you can also download an MP3 for free here, the full album Jigsaw is expected to drop in April of next year.
