ECC Concert Picks: Eastern Conference Champions, Nerve, Laura Marling...

It’s nearly the weekend; can you feel it? Characterized by an overwhelming urge to get out and play, we could nearly hear it a mile away. It’s time to put away the earbuds and invest in the live venue format with some bands that love the life out of performing. A lot of the acts we’ve chosen can speak for themselves, but if you need quality and variety, you’ve got it – fusion rock, experimental rock, electronic instrumental, and folk are just a few of the styles we’ve got – check out our picks for the weekend below.

Laura Marling will soon be back with a new album on March 22, 2010 and with this new album, she’s got a new look and a new sound. We know Marling as the fragile looking blond who sang haunting folk-pop songs about manic depression, ghosts and dolls. In her second single off of upcoming album, I Speak Because I Can, “Devil’s Spoke” digs deeper into a heavier folk sound almost veering into an unknown world with its tribal beats. Poll: Which British Female Singer Do You Prefer?

Poll: Which British Female Singer Do You Prefer?

Although the States have been invaded by Brit music numerous times, the majority of the time it was done by all male bands such as The Beatles, The Zombies, and Herman’s Hermits. Now it’s the women’s turn. It’s a little more than obvious that we, here in the States today, are smitten with a few British female solo artists and their diverse but incredible talent.

Five come to my mind: There’s the infamous Amy Winehouse who first came to us with her distinct jazz voice and the twist to the old school sound. There’s Lily Allen who spits out blunt lyrics above those hype beats. There’s Kate Nash who, like Allen, sings with that charming Cockney accent right on top of her pop guitar strumming. Then there’s the two who are a bit more soothing and perhaps too wise for their age: Laura Marling who tells the tales of gothic beauty with her guitar at the age of 18 and Adele with vocals which you refused to believe came from a 19 year old (now 20). Is it attitude, awe, or raw talent that you enjoy most? Who do you like most?

This week has definitely been more of a musician with a guitar type week with the exception of Brand New. Three out of four of the picks are solo artists but all of them definitely have their own edge. Not exactly sure why that is? Maybe something to do with the Holidays?

Brand New (Listen Now), Loney, Dear (Listen Now), Ingrid Michaelson (Listen Now), and Laura Marling (Listen Now)

BeatCrave Fav: Laura Marling

 BeatCrave Fav: Laura Marling

It’s a shock to discover that Laura Marling is only 18 years old. Her music embodies wisdom far beyond her years as she gently strums folk-pop rhythms underneath her meticulous tales of love, depression, and hope. Although she is young and those crystalline blue eyes underneath the lightest of blond hair are the greatest concentration of wonderment you’ll ever come across, her lyrics are not fair as her porcelain skin. Within those beautifully told stories, there is a strong-willed soul similar to the great Joni Mitchell and Vashti Bunyan; this alone shatters her association with fragility.

Marling is a former member of Noah and the Whale, but she has also toured solo with many notable indie acts such as Adam Green and Jamie T. Her debut album, Alas, I Cannot Swim, is filled with unearthly concepts and titles such as her latest single “Night Terror.” Again, it’s completely confounding to know that Marling is still in her teens, because with all the intimacy and mystique, she’s musically re-birthed the gothic beauty of the Bronte sisters.

Check Laura Marling out in our BEATCRAVE FAV series and find out all the info you could ever want below! Then remember to vote for her in tomorrow’s poll if you agree she’s been the most mesmerizing artist this week!
