Le Switch doesn’t sound like a Los Angeles band. If the west coast has a sound, they don’t sound like that either. And they definitely don’t have a sound that coincides with the mainstream music of today (be it rock, pop, or country). They are wrong in all the right ways. This week Le Switch released The Rest of Me is Space, and from the time you start listening at “How We Imagined It” to the very end of “Hurky Jurky” there’s this underlining sound that makes this record sound like a collection of songs that were carefully thought out and arranged.

Le Switch’s record release party at Spaceland on Thursday was definitely one of those nights that made you realize you’ve finally made the right decision if you have never done so before in your life. The metallic-lined venue was the only place to be this night. Celebrating the release of their brand new album, The Rest of Me Is Space, the band had a full lineup of supporting acts whose sounds perfectly cushioned their pigeon-hole escaping diversity with the help of Big Whup, Mississippi Man and Shirley Rolls.

To some, Los Angeles-based band Le Switch may be considered an acquired, refined taste – but the resounding sound in our ears resembles something very early-on Billy Joel. Stream a couple of tracks here and let’s walk you through an example: On the one hand, it’s so adorable and honest (“I’m Not On”, “How We Imagined It”). On the other hand, its a hard sound that takes us by surprise (“Monkberry Moon Delight”). It could be the way that lead vocalist Aaron Kyle growls out of nowhere (without apology), or that their name itself denotes a total switch in temperament. It could be that their horn “section” and piano are given an equal opportunity to rock out with the percussion and showcased vocals.
Simply put, Le Switch has given us many a reason to love listening to them. Check them out in our BeatCrave Fav series below, and if you feel at all the same, be sure to vote for them in Friday’s poll!
