Yeah Yeah Yeahs took the Budweiser stage at Lollapalooza 8:30pm. Bringing in Karen O. and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs as a last minute replacement for the Beastie Boys proved to be a great choice as fans split almost exactly in half for the night’s two headliners. Karen O. marched out onstage in a colorful headdress giving the crowd a gruff “what’s up Chicago!” before launching into “Runaway”. The dance party didn’t really start until “Heads Will Roll” which got nearly the entire crowd jumping by the first “Off off off with your head; dance dance dance ‘til you’re dead.”

The beginning of August means only one thing in Chicago, Perry Farrell’s 13th annual Lollapalooza in the city’s beautiful Grant Park. While the 2009 headliners Kings of Leon, Depeche Mode, Tool, The Killers, Jane’s Addiction, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs don’t quite live up to 2008′s which included: Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, Wilco, Kanye West, and Nine Inch Nails, the mid-level acts at this years festival lend to an entire day of musical enjoyment so you don’t have to wait ’til the sun goes down to get your groove on.

After numerous online speculations about Foo Fighters‘ Dave Grohl, Led Zeppelin‘s John Paul Jones, and Queens of the Stone Age‘s Josh Homme forming a supergroup, it turns out that the rumors are ACTUALLY true! The three musicians collectively call themselves Them Crooked Vultures and apparently, they’ve been working on a studio album for three years.
If you’re happy with that mere tidbit, then you’ll be stoked to hear that Them Crooked Vultures have potentially been booked to play Lollapalooza‘s aftershow! Perhaps this also will soothe fans of the Beastie Boys and those not-much-fans of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The band name wasn’t officially announced but the sign above with the three symbols each representing 1/3 of the supergroup was posted.

Now that Pitchfork 2009 has happened, music goers are looking forward to the next big one: Lollpalooza. Much excitement was was generated from the fact that Beastie Boys were scheduled to perform as co-headliners. However, as we unfortunately reported yesterday, all Beastie Boys dates are canceled so Yauch can get his rest. Work on the album has been postponed and these canceled dates include major festivals.
However, no worries, music goers. According to Time-Out Chicago, Lollapalooza was quick to replace their slot with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs who are no strangers to large festivals. Just check out our pictures from Coachella and see how great they were at that one!
