The Festival starts on October 17th and goes for two days with a total of two stages. The good thing about this festival is that if you wish to see all of the bands, you can–there will be no overlapping sets (sweet!).
Complete Lineup brought to you by Noise Pop and Another Planet Entertainment…
Brooklyn duo Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, better known as MGMT, will have the distinct pleasure of warming up the sure-to-be excited crowd for Paul McCartney’s two-night stint at Fenway Park in Boston August 5th and 6th.
If you had MGMT as likeliest opening act selection for the ex-Beatle give yourself a pat on the back because I don’t think many expected this popular twosome. But McCartney gets high marks for keeping things interesting by tapping the alt. popsters to kick things off.
Ice Cream man, Matt Allen, has been going to all the music festivals and giving out free ice-cream to. Apparently, this guy is so interesting (or maybe it is the concept of giving out free ice-cream) that Babelgum.com has just launched an original series following him around to the festivals. What does Allen talk about, one might ask? Ice-cream, of course. And his experience riding around in the ice-cream truck.
If that’s not enough to capture your attention, don’t fret, there is also performances from his favorite bands. Two episodes are up now from Bonnaroo: One with Chairlift and the White Rabbits and the second with MGMT and a circus troupe.
Okay, you die-hard Weezer fans – what do you think of this? Here is front man, Rivers Cuomo, doing a rendition of MGMT‘s “Kids” in bright pink shades last night in LA. Prefaced by a shout out to T-Mobile (“T-Mobile in the house!”) then intervened by Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face,” it makes me wonder: What happened to Weezer?
They’ve consistently put out decent albums but nothing has lived up to their self-titled record or Pinkerton lately. Is Weezer still… cool? Let us know what you think by voting below!
U.S. indie band MGMT has threatened to sue French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s party for using their song Kids without permission. It’s one of those ironic, rare moments when a politician’s plan backfires, because Sarkozy is one of the leaders of the “fight against piracy”, having implemented, in France, the first “three strikes” law that gets a user disconnected based on three formal copyright complaints.
The party has confessed to using the MGMT’s track at its national congress in January, in two online videos and in political advertisements. After claiming that the transgression was a mistake, the party’s administration offered the band a symbolic 1 Euro ($1.26) for copyright infringement, to which the band’s lawyer, Isabell Wekstein, responded:
MGMT have announced that their indie hit, “Time to Pretend” (named one of BeatCrave’s top 10 indie songs of 2008) from the album “Oracular Spectacular” is actually about a praying mantis. After winning the “Best Track” award at Shockwave’s NME Awards, Andrew VanWyngarden stated:
It [Time to Pretend] was a praying mantis that was named after our experimental music adviser. We found her in a yard sale. She loved The Clash.
A praying mantis….ummm, ok. That totally makes sense (heavy layer of sarcasm). I was going for a theme of basic youthful angst and the disillusionment we all have with the modern world in which we are forced to live, work breed and die:
It’s nearing the end of the week and there is some seriously strange news stirring. Joaquin Phoenix may have started a domino effect with his bizarre interview. Now, things are getting even weirder.
Santogold has decided to change her name to Santigold, yet offers absolutely no explanation for the vowel switch. Maybe she just wants to release another self-titled album that’s different.
The ever-sterile Michael Jackson has somehow ended up with a MRSA type skin infection that has swelled both his face and hands. Now it’s getting to the point where I really do feel awful for the guy. Talk about bad (pun intended) luck.
A new film about the life of Jimi Hendrix is in the pre-production stages. Heavy rumor indicates that the famous guitarist will be played by his modern day reincarnate, Lenny Kravitz. I know, I know, none can compare to Hendrix but it’s less about Kravitz’ skill and more about his swagger.
MGMT is set to create artwork for the new Playboy which hits shelves February 14. The androgynous boys of MGMT may just give the straight mag a cool edge for the month.
Love Santigold’s new name? Think it’s Karma attacking Michael? Wish they’d cast someone else as Hendrix? Looking forward to the artistically inspried Playboy? Let us know!

The Killers are back with a new video off of their album, Day and Age. For their second single, the band has tapped Ray Tintori, the director who gave us MGMT‘s “Electric Feel.” While that video was eccentric, “Spaceman,” just comes off a little too odd. With a larger budget for this project, the money seemed to all go towards costumes and the result was a video looking a little too Of Montreal-esque. Front man, Brandon Flowers, enters wearing a red body suit topped with huge shoulder pads and feathers. He then proceeds to walk up a skull tower that is holding some sort of feast. Don’t follow? Yeah, we’re confused too.
Check it out yourself after the jump, then tell us what you think!
