Even the most faithful Modest Mouse fans would admit that the band is a bit manic when it comes to their live shows. When they’re on, they’re on and when they’re off they’re off. The whole shows seems to hinge on lead singer Isaac Brock’s mood and how far he’s willing to take the show. Anyone who was at the first night of the Pitchfork Music Festival would agree that Modest Mouse was on Friday night.

Manifest Equality was upon us last week as we all celebrated what it should be like to have equal rights. BeatCrave was lucky enough to attend one of the event’s shows on Saturday night where bands such as Sea Wolf and Issac Brock of Modest Mouse rocked the house. Although the “house” was literally an old space of Big Lots, Manifest Equality did a wonderful job of turning the old bargain shopping store into an art gallery where pieces of art made powerful statements about gay marriage and civil rights. We didn’t actually get a performance from Sam Sparro, but DJ Daisy O’Dell was spinning some great tunes for a great cause.

Modest Mouse first showed us that they had visual creativity (or at least their good judgment with directors) through their video for “Float On.” It was one of the true indie videos that MTV2 had on rotation for a while, and it was also the song that garnered them mainstream success.
We could care less for the mainstream part. Modest Mouse was and always will be a solid band. However, their new video for “Whale Song” reminds us why there should be more music videos played on music television channels. With a song like this paired up with trippy images which tell the story of a man caught in between two worlds Modest Mouse, Nando Costa, and Bent Lab Image should inspire programs to focus on visionary output more often.
One word: Snails. Check it out below and let us know what you think!
