Oscar Song Nominations: Karen O, Jack White, Lykke Li...

The Oscars just released a statement revealing which songs are nominated for the golden statue. As usual, the list is very lengthy in correlation to the many films released this year. What we find pleasing about this year’s list is the amount of indie artists who are nominated.

We all knew Karen O got her Grammy nod for her work on Where the Wild Things Are when Miley Cyrus got booted, but the Yeah Yeah Yeahs‘ front lady has also been nominated for an Oscar. Other notable mentions include Jack White‘s “Fly Farm Blues” from It Might Get Loud, Lykke Li‘s “Possibility” from New Moon, and Jarvis Cocker‘s “Petey’s Song” from Fantastic Mr. Fox. New Moon Music Video Lupe Fiasco Premieres Solar Midnight New Moon Music Video: Lupe Fiasco Premieres Solar Midnight

New Moon has undoubtedly released on of the best soundtrack albums of 2009 by taking an indie turn for the better. The soundtrack’s lead single “Meet Me on the Equinox” by Death Cab For Cutie was the perfect rock sound that came off as introspective and suspenseful. The video for it featured numerous shots of Bella struggling with her loss of Edward and Jacob’s entrance eventually leading up to the pinnacle part of the film where she tries to save her true love.

With Death Cab capturing the desperate solitude New Moon‘s characters are obligated to live, the soundtrack evolved around depression quite a bit. However, if fans didn’t purchase the soundtrack with the bonus tracks they may have missed out on Lupe Fiasco‘s contribution. Known for his hip-hop albums, Lupe Fiasco: Food & Liquor and its follow-up, Lupe Fiasco: The Cool, the rapper took a refreshing spin on the genre. The track he lent to New Moon, however, is far from his signature sound. “Solar Midnight” which he produced, provides the edgier rock side of Fiasco.
