The Vaselines formed in Glasgow during 1987 but they were put on a high pedestal for all music fanatics when Nirvana covered three of their songs and listed them as a major influence. They’ve also been known to include guest appearances by notable Belle & Sebastian members whose career started later in the 90s.
Now, out of nowhere, the band is about to go on tour in support of their first new album in 20 years. If we were to pick a band who was doing classic indie pop way before others came on to the scene and unfortunately dipped it the genre into Twee, The Vaselines would be it.

Guitar Hero 5 is having some issues in both the legal department and their liaison with musicians. To many fans of the game, getting a certain avatar to sing other people’s songs can sound kind of fun. However, it might be a little weird to hear Kurt Cobain exclaim, “Yeah Boyeeee” like Public Enemy’s Flavor Flav or sing songs by Bon Jovi… or Bush.
Hardcore Nirvana fans do not support this feature in the game, and Cobain’s widow, Courtney Love, along with Dave Grohl and Kris Novoselic certainly don’t stand for it either. Love had threatened to sue Activision, the game’s makers, so Cobain would not be seen singing other artists’ songs in the game.

Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, the surviving members of Nirvana, on Thursday issued a statement objecting to the use of the late Kurt Cobain’s likeness in the Guitar Hero 5 video game.
In the game players who unlock Cobain’s image can utilize him for any kind of song the player wants. Grohl and Novoselic have urged Activision (the maker of Guitar Hero) to ‘re-lock’ Cobain’s character to stop this usage.

It’s that time of year again when we show appreciation to the men who we owe our lives to. No, I am not talking about your future ex-husbands (you know I’m right, have you seen the divorce rates these days??), I am talking about your father!
Now even though I was generalizing and not all children are blessed to have a father who is always there for them and who always provides them with the love and affection they need but, for the sake of this editorial, we are going to pretend we all have the perfect father and we are trying to get our perfect father the perfect album for a Father’s Day gift.
Not all fathers are alike but they tend to fall in one of the following categories. Find your “father” and check out what kind of music he would prefer…

In celebration of Record Store Day earlier this April, The Bad Plus performed live in their hometown, Minneapolis, Minnesota, at the Electric Fetus. I like how drummer Dave King’s technique cuts the rhythm just enough to make it interesting, and pianist Ethan Iverson gives the band’s jazz fusion his own classical touch.
The store crowded to see the local jazz power-trio perform songs from their new album For All I Care, which they released in February. The album is a collection of covers which added Wendy Lewis’ vocals to their established formation. Watch another video from the same location after the jump, with Lewis singing Nirvana’s Lithium:

After learning a few lessons on day one of the SXSW music conference , I began day 2 (March 19) with a fresh fervor. No line or mob of badge-holding yuppies was going to stand in my way this time.
My determination served me well, but not at first. The line for the Von Bondies at the Austin Convention Center was a sight to behold – it snaked almost all the way around the hallway to the registration center. Instead of sticking around for a lost cause, I embarked on a walk up Red River Street toward Stubb’s BBQ.
