Album Of The Week: The Bad, The Good, The Great Deerhunter Vs. Jimmy Eat World

With all the new music released these days, it’s hard to keep track of what is really good and what is pretty much a toss out. Some of the most major names in the industry are reworking their sound, collaborating, or mundanely creating the same old tune again. We looked at the newest releases coming out over the next couple weeks, and did you the favor of deciding what’s worth it and what’s getting panned in the reviews. We’ve got a list of the worst to the best albums this week (from nah… to yeah!), and some that fall in between:

malcolm mclaren 4 11 10 Musicians Remember Malcolm McLaren (Even Diddy)

Yesterday marked the passing of musician, svengali and impresario Malcolm McLaren, most famous for managing both the New York Dolls and the Sex Pistols, as well as being a gifted musician (and wily self-promoter) in his own right.  You can read the details of his death to due to cancer here.

Further, if you’re interested in measuring the impact McLaren had on the music world, and the musician’s who populate it, Pitchfork scoured the internet for their quotes and responses, some of which we’ve gathered here, from former Sex Piston John Lydon to No Age to (God knows why) Diddy.

John Lydon:

No Age has teamed up with Monster House director, Gil Kenan, to bring you the stop-motion video for their song, “Losing Feeling” from their latest EP with the same title.

Take a look at the world through the eyes of not only one mouse – but two. It’s somewhat adorable because the mice aren’t scary, are up to mischief and eventually turn into the Randy and Dean. The question is… can you guess which mouse is who before that happens?

Crystal Castles and No Age Injured From Weekend ShowsWhat is it with summer and musicians frequently getting injured? Not only do mainstream acts get injuries but of course, indie artists do too – and they’re just as bad.

Street Boners and TV Carnage reported that Crystal Castles’ Alice Glass received a concussion at LA’s Hard Fest 2009. Although the police had canceled the event for a “hazard” status, it was actually one of the rave’s riot cops that gave Alice a kick in the head which is currently keeping her in the hospital.

lostmusic09 2 19 LOST in Indie Rock Which Indie Rockers Would Play Lost Characters

Remember in high school when your English teacher would make you write compare and contrast essays?  Well, for some reason I always tried to sneak just a comparison paper by her – I hated writing the contrast part.  Something about how if two things are inherently different, its more fun to find similarities than to point out the obvious differences. I love comparing books to movies, movies to TV shows, apples to oranges (they’re both round) – hell, whatever comes to mind.  This article is aimed at taking my two favorite things in the world and smashing them together: LOST and music.

Poll: Which Coachella Date Is A Must See For You?

So, the Coachella line up (potential line-up – there could be additions) has officially been posted! From the looks of it, the roster of artists is very spread out in terms of genre, mainstream, and quantity. Friday’s giving us Girl Talk, Morrissey, and the Ting Tings. Saturday’s presenting Dr. Dog, Fleet Foxes, and MSTRKRFT. Then Sunday anticipates Jenny Lewis, No Age, and Vivian Girls…. However, the question is: What is the quality of this line up?

We’ve been hearing mixed reactions to the line-up and some of them have been extremely disapproving or extremely delighted. So we want to know one thing. If you had to choose ONLY ONE DAY out all all three dates, which day would you go to Coachella for?

See the entire 2009 Coachella line-up.
