With the release of her highly-anticipated album, The ArchAndroid (Suites II and Suite III), Janelle Monae has certainly stepped up in the game of true and talented entertainment. Personally, Ms. Monae was one of the artists I was most excited to see at this year’s Outside Lands Festival. However, with my busy schedule of stage hopping, the singer-songwriter and dancer wounded my warm and fuzzy elation when I was stung with the news that her set would be starting 15 minutes late.

After seeing Mayer Hawthorne take us back via soul, I decided to walk all the way to the Twin Peaks stage where The Devil Makes Three would be schooling me on some good old fashioned Bluegrass and old-time music. Going from an R&B genre to this was a drastic change but the walk to this stage was well worth it. The Devil Makes Three put some kind of spell on me during their set at Outside Lands Festival on Sunday and I didn’t want to come out of it clear-headed. With a band perfectly suited for an outdoor festival like this, I would have been happy to stay lost in their banjo strumming, upright bass plucking and and smooth vocals that were beautifully dipped in golden twang.

Sunday was our last day to enjoy the San Francisco air as we went down to Golden Gate Park once again to catch some great live acts at Outside Lands Festival. The first of the day offered a lot of soul and throwback vibes as we could hear Amos Lee in the middle of his set as we walked on to the grounds. The groove of soul music continued to permeate the air near the parks’ entrance when Mayer Hawthorne took the stage with The County.

We kicked the weekend off right by attending Outside Lands Festival and Saturday was jam packed with great musical acts, mouth-watering foods, fresh nature and care-free attitudes from everyone here. Although the crisp and almost-Fall season-like weather was a drastic change from the unbearable humidity of Lollapalooza, we found ourselves running around catching as many bands as we could and becoming amused with all the random people watching we did.
If you weren’t able to come up to San Francisco this weekend for the hippie-loving festival, no worries! We’ve got you covered. Take a look at our Saturday at Outside Lands Festival through our photos below!

With day one of Outside Lands coming to a close everyone in attendance got to sample many great things about San Francisco. Golden Gate Park, art work and the wonderful wine and food were all great but the one thing that is synonymous with The Bay is music. Many that had gathered around 50 years ago were back in full force to support former members of The Grateful Dead doing a new project called Furthur.
Lead by Bob Weir and Phil Lesh, Furthur brought back the LSD fueled jam sessions that seem to go on all night. Each song seemed to take a life of its own and morphed into something bigger. Layers and layers of liguid guitar which set everyone’s sails to a higher level.

As we previously mentioned in our introductory article to Outside Lands Festival, getting a chance to see Cat Power aka Chan Marshall perform again was pretty exciting. Although she did play Coachella in 2009, we haven’t heard much from the sultry-voiced singer-songwriter since then.
There were many things about Cat Power’s set that took on a very different vibe from her performances that took place years ago. The most notable change was her confidence – which she seemed to have a lot more of this time around.

Tokyo Police Club played one of the most energetic sets of the day on Saturday at Outside Lands Festival. They’ve been touring non-stop to support their latest album, Champ, and the shows just seem to get bigger and bigger. Although they just played Los Angeles on Thursday night, seeing them in a festival setting such as San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park was a refreshing way to take in their music this weekend.

My Morning Jacket is one of those bands you have to see at least once during a lifetime and we’ve been lucky enough to see them several times at numerous festivals. Although they started late, fans were already packed in front of the Lands End stage to hear the Kentucky-based band play some of their biggest hits.
Opening with music that almost sounded like smooth jazz, the band finally walked on to stage and went into “Tonight I Wanna Celebrate” which had the crowd roar with approval.

Although Freelance Whales played the Twin Peaks stage earlier in the day at Outside Lands Fest, we were able to catch a private set at the Sony Ericcson tent where they offered us acoustic renditions of their songs such as “Generator^2nd Floor” and “Ghosting.” After they seemed to be running around the festival as much as we had been jumping around, the band surprisingly seemed to be excited to share a special performance with those of us who were lucky enough to get in.
