Oh, boy. As if weren’t confused enough about why Owl City sounds eerily similar to The Postal Service, we now have so many questions about Adam Young’s new video for “Vanilla Twilight.” Dreamy may describe Owl City’s music if you’re fan but why did he recruit a major basketball star to be part of his visual accompanist for his latest single? More importantly, why has Shaquille O’Neal agreed to star in Owl City’s video?!

Owl City has extremely blown up within the last few months and we say – good for him. Although, a lot of music fiends can’t seem to help but notice that his style sounds VERY similar to The Postal Service‘s signature sound.
Right down to the electronic beats, the dreamy lyrics, and most of all – the vocals. There is no doubt that Adam Young completely echoes Ben Gibbard when he sings and it’s begun to rub many people the wrong way.

So often the Troubador hosts shows where a select few actually go to listen to the music and the vast majority seem to run around making sure everyone sees that they are at this show: it’s a lame peacock-esque self-indulgent scenester display that is 1) distracting 2) nauseating and 3) distracting and nauseating.
It was a true breath of fresh air this past Tuesday as Owl City drew in a crowd of kids (quite literally) and music fans who were there to enjoy the bright, pop-infused, electronic-light-parade-sound that Adam Young and crew bring to the stage. Continue Reading

When we last checked with Owl City, aka Adam Young, his fan base was incredibly huge but he was still an unsigned artist making music out of his parent’s basement.
Now a few months after winning our BeatCrave Fav Poll of May by a landslide, Young’s life has drastically changed. His MySpace page which boasted electro-pop anthems, all sounding like they were played by more than one person, has accumulated more than 200,000 friends and he has sold 15,000 singles via iTunes according to the Associated Press.
One other factor that skyrocketed his popularity to an unimaginable height? Young was snatched up by Universal Records for a record deal alongside Taylor Swift, Lil Wayne, and Kanye West.

So, I was just sitting here watching one of our BeatCrave Fav winner’s, Owl City‘s, latest music video”Fireflies.” Isn’t it interesting the way that they incorporated these cute little metal toys into the video? I think it is. If only they had some weird autographed toys laying around that they could have Adam sign and give-away to his loving fans who are willing to scour the internet for him. I wonder where one could get a toy like that???
Okay fine, we got what you’re looking for right here…

Packing over 120 people into a tiny room would seem uncomfortable, right? The Glass House in Pomona doesn’t seem to think so. They wristband so there are ins and outs. Merch tables line the walls by the entrance. And the bands? Amazing. On Tuesday, May 26th, Runner Runner, Relient K, and BeatCrave Fav Owl City graced the stage and performed for a sold out crowd.

Despite visiting Seattle for the first time last month, Owl City‘s most prominent song is “Hello Seattle”, an electro-pop song filled with lyrics about hospital parking lots, manta rays, and albatross. With over 10 million plays on MySpace, 20,000 digital albums sold, and over 200,000 individual tracks sold, Owl City’s only member Adam Young has been compared to hellogoodbye, Death Cab for Cutie, and even Jack’s Mannequin.
Owl City writes and records his music in his basement, an interesting feat considering that his exposure to artists like Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy deem him popular enough to garner props from celebrities themselves. Young doesn’t limit himself, though. He is currently involved in two side projects: Swimming with Dolphins and Port Blue.
Catch Owl City on tour with Relient K in a city near you and check him out in our BeatCrave Fav series below!
