While it wasn’t quite Wu-Tang Clan, Raekwon was the closest that the Pitchfork Music Festival could get to the iconic hip-hop group in 2010. Raekwon is just one part of the nine person group (used to be ten until Ol’ Dirty Bastard passed away in 2004). Other members include RZA, GZA, Method Man, Ghostface Kilah, Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa, and Cappadonna if you listen to Wikipedia. Two weeks ago on the same day, two titans of hip-hop released highly-anticipated follow-ups to some of their most famous material: Jay-Z discarded the legacies of his previous two post-retirement releases in order to deliver The Blueprint 3, while Wu-Tang member Raekwon attempted to recalibrate his career with Only Built 4 Cuban Linx Pt. II, a sequel to his 1995 solo debut.

But the question is, who’s got more to lose or gain with these spinoffs of earlier successes? And for that matter, which one is actually more successful? Even though we’re fans of both artists, we decided to take an in-depth look at each album, check out its conception, design and collective impact, and determine, even arbitrarily, which of the two will – or maybe just who should – be able to resuscitate their career with the release of this record.

Queen Latifah, Raekwon, The Roots! We are in for some good quality hip-hop music this week.  Queen Latifah goes back to her roots after trying jazz music (which was surprisingly good) for her last album. The Roots, Hip-Hop’s band famed for still using live instrumentals in performances, say their 9th studio album has a positive attitude which focuses on the end of the Bush administration and the beginning of the Obama presidency.

It seems we have run out of good titles for albums. Just a few weeks after Ginuwine released an album titled The Bachelor we have Patrick Wolf using the same name for his new one.  At least the English singer-songwriter sounds completely different from the R&B crooner, with his romantic folk/techno-pop sound.
