Packing over 120 people into a tiny room would seem uncomfortable, right? The Glass House in Pomona doesn’t seem to think so. They wristband so there are ins and outs. Merch tables line the walls by the entrance. And the bands? Amazing. On Tuesday, May 26th, Runner Runner, Relient K, and BeatCrave Fav Owl City graced the stage and performed for a sold out crowd.

CD Review: Relient K, “The Bird and the Bee Sides”

thebirdme08 09 18 CD Review: Relient K, The Bird and the Bee Sides“The Bird and the Bee Sides” consists of twenty-six tracks – the first thirteen making up “The Nashville Tennis EP” (new music); the second thirteen making up “The Bird and the Bee Sides” (demos, acoustics, actual B-sides). However slightly bombastic in approach, the end result is fun and winsome, retaining a consistent sound reminiscent of prior studio releases. While a first-time listen might incite feelings of transition scenes during an episode of Laguna Beach (with a sound similar to Blink 182 and Jimmy Eat World on the surface), once past the first few tracks, the assumption might find itself quickly retracted.

Relient K has been merging towards more of a pop-sound than started with nearly a decade ago, but what’s appealing about this album is its smorgasbord-esque rendering. While there’s plenty enough room to venture into ska (“Five Iron Frenzy [Ska Version]“) and reggae (“No Reaction”), the band interjects short and sweet tracks (“You’ll Always Be My Best Friend”, “Beaming”), heartwrenching pseudo-ballads (“Who I am Hates Who I’ve Become”) and sad, sad songs masquerading as audible extractions from a lover’s dreamsleep (“Curl Up and Die”).
