Ah, springtime – the bridge between cold and warm, cloudy and sunny, rainy and postcard-perfect, wish-you-were-here-like. True, variety is the spice of life – even if it is of the dry our skin, frizz our hair, or wetspot our shoes kind. Needless to say, the tickle our eardrums, bring us down (then up, then down), and suspend us motionless whydon’tcha – musically-speaking – appeals to us far more. We’ll let you be the judge, but suffice it to say we believe our band picks for the weekend will fit the bill just fine until the next seasonal change ambushes us once more. Check ‘em out below…

So let’ face it – some of you have started school, some of you are about to start school; some of you are working so summer break really means nothing to you. Yet, with the weekend being a somewhat universal concept, there’s no reason we can’t all come together and hang loose to some pretty rad live show opportunities. We’re really happy with our particular round up of shows this weekend; from a past uber-favorite band and atypical rock, to ambient alt-rock and quirky modern pop with a retro twist, we hope to have covered all bases and satisfy your music cravings. The annual Sunset Junction is in full swing this weekend and we were there to capture all the music during its first day on Saturday. As usual, the sun out in full effect making us who don’t handle the heat too well be a bit more cautious about beverage intake (that’s not water) during the day. However, that was a bit hard to do when they added a VIP section near the Bates stage.
Things seemed to run a bit smoother both behind the scenes (in regards to checking in) and the fair even added another stage that was locals only. Sponsored by The Fold, the new stage at Edgecliff was one we frequented the most since we’re absurdly in love with our local music scene. Experience Sunset Junction on Saturday through our eyes via our photos below!

Zombies? In February? Judging by the sunken-eyed, torn-fleshed, blood-splotched crowd that lined the small stretch of Sunset Boulevard on Saturday night, it wasn’t too unreasonable to have assumed that Halloween came early this year. The 2nd Annual Zombie Prom with Saint Motel at The Roxy Theater, rather, served as a beacon of light in welcoming the undead for some posthumous playtime. Game for nearly any invitation to get dolled up, the line stretched around the block with zombies dressed to impressed – taffeta, corsages and all.

Ah, Valentine’s Day weekend, the purveyor of the following options: (1) diving into a tub of ice cream; (2) hiding under the covers; or (3) falling into a roses-dinner-diamonds(!)-teddy bear trap that Hallmark insists is the norm. What’s that? You’re looking for more options? We thought you’d never ask:
- Shadow Shadow Shade | Friday, February 12 | 8:30 pm | 21 + | $8 | Spaceland, Los Angeles, CA – Map | The artists formerly known as Afternoons, are apparently on the verge of releasing a new EP. Of course we don’t know the release date; music thrives off of the elongated tease. However, after sampling what’s available on their MySpace, we’re definitely getting a Queen-slash-David Bowie-slash-Magnetic Fields vibe. Believe us when we say that we are giggling with anticipation. With Twilight Sleep and Marvelous Toy – Buy Tickets

Forget about a triple threat. In regards to talent, Los Angeles-based band, Saint Motel, has proven to be a quadruple threat since they’ve released their debut EP, ForPlay. As friends who all met in film school, their live shows have been known to be more than just performances and the indie rock outfit continues to dish out the goods with their vaudeville-like guitar riffs and pop-punk choruses that echo the old days of Weezer infused with classic harmonies of the Beatles.
