Foo Fighters CP 5 27 2011b Sasquatch Music Festival 2011: Recap

After four days of music in the Pacific Northwest all we can hope for is that next year we get an even more expanded five days. Trough the sunshine, grey clouds, rain and the occasional outburst of lightning we got to experience everything that is Washington and The Sasquatch Music Festival. Oh, and we got to see a ton of kicking music the entire time.

Whether it be up at the rail at the main stage watching lightning streak  the sky as the pitter patter of rain fell down to WIlco, or getting out of the sun and catching a stripped down set by the Decemberists in the acoustic tent, there was never a dull moment over the Memorial Day weekend.

It was also a happy 10th year for Sasquatch and we were honored to share in the festivities and fun. We only wish that we would have nabbed a piece of the giant Sasquatch cake before Wayne Coyne, singer of The Flaming Lips, decided to rip it into pieces and cake the crowd with it.

While we stopped by every stage, visited all the tents, and even got some time to hang out with a few of the bands around the grounds, there was still so much that we couldn’t get the chance to see at the fest.

Were you at the Sasquatch 2011 Music Festival? Let us know what your favorite moments were that we may have missed.

Dirty Projectors have always been known for the quirky yet detailed orchestrations that dabble in experimental indie rock. However, their status peaked when they released “Stillness Is the Move,” an r&b song in disguise. Despite the fact that they initially received flak for the soul-dipping tune, it went on to be their most popular song and among others in 2009. Their album, Bitte Orca, which the song was released on via Domino Records, made our Top 20 Albums of 2009 list so we were glad to finally see them on stage again. We may have driven all the way up the West Coast to finally see them live again but their out-of-the-box arrangements only seemed natural in the spacious lands that are Sasquatch Music Festival.

Girls CP 5 30 2010f Girls: Sasquatch Music Festival 2010 Photos

San Francisco-based band, Girls, stole our hearts last year with Album. Sure, they may have caught our attention with NSFW videos, but what a way to stake their claim on their place in the indie music world? Besides, it was more than obvious that their music spoke for itself and when it did speak, we only heard great things.

We happened to catch Girls at a small show Space15Twenty was hosting last year when their Troubadour show sold out, so we were anxious to see the guys (we assume you know that Girls is actually a bunch of dudes) play a larger stage with a larger crowd at Sasquatch. With a new hair cut, Christopher Owens and his band impressed us yet again.

TuneYards CP 5 30 2010b Tune Yards: Sasquatch Music Festival 2010 Photos

If you ever want to see and hear the purest of the pure talent, we highly suggest you go to a show that Tune-Yards is playing. Tune-Yards, a moniker which Merrill Garbus performs under, is some of the most diverse sounds of indie music you will ever hear all in one artist. Her vocal talents alone are unbelievably chilling and she alone just might be the one to stop the incessant cycle of musicians looping music in a poor manner. Tune-Yards loops music in the most mesmerizing way, with or without her bassist and saxophone player, and we’ve been blown away from her hodgepodge of mighty songwriting. Bonus points for Sasquatch on booking her this year.

MT St Vincent Vietnam band CP 5 30 2010g Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band: Sasquatch Music Festival 2010 Photos

Mt. St. Helens Vietnam was not originally scheduled to Sasquatch Music Festival this year, but we’re sure glad they made it in. Dallas Green, aka City and Colour, was supposed to play the Big Foot stage this day but due to being diagnosed with pneumonia, his manager had to pull the plug on the gig. Although we’re sure many City and Colour fans were disappointed, we were absolutely stoked to finally catch Seattle-based band, Mt. St. Helens play a set. Were we disappointed with the replacement? Let’s just say, for a fairly new band, the request for them to play Sasquatch was entirely justified.

Jets Overhead CP 5 30 2010c Jets Overhead: Sasquatch Music Festival 2010 Photos

Jets Overhead was actually a band we didn’t have on our Sasquatch must-see list, but we soon realized that was poor judgment on our part after we happened to catch some of their set while walking around for food. Their ambient-rock was killing and causing the Yeti stage to pull in its largest and most energetic crowd of the day.

The five-piece band may have slipped through our radar for awesome Canadian bands, but at least we seized this opportunity to find out why everyone was going crazy for them and guess what? It was worth it.

Local Natives CP 5 30 2010a Local Natives: Sasquatch Music Festival 2010 Photos

Local Natives is not a new band to us, nor should they be to you! We’ve only covered them so many times on the site that we’re a little embarrassed of our obvious band crush. So, with that kept in mind, you knew we weren’t going to miss their first Sasquatch moment. After their popularity spread like wildfire during 2009, those who actually attended Sasquatch should have been well-educated enough to know that Local Natives always puts on a spectacular show.

Local Natives CP 5 30 2010a Sasquatch Music Festival Day 2: Tallest Man On Earth, Tune Yards, Pavement

Day 2 of Sasquatch Music Festival was much colder but the lineup was obviously a lot more packed than the first day with big names such as The xx, Public Enemy, Kid Cudi, Tegan and Sara, LCD Soundsystem, Pavement, Massive Attack and more. Sleeping on the camp grounds was wearing us out a bit but it was worth it when we got to the entrance early on in the day.

The best part about gaining entrance ahead of usual schedule was that we actually got to see the very first act of the day – something many people miss out on from boozing too much or waking up late – and today we had the pleasure of hearing some Dinosaur Feathers at the Yeti stage. It’s a pretty good way to start out the day, if we do say so ourselves…

Nada Surf CP 5 29 2010k Nada Surf: Sasquatch Music Festival 2010 Photos

Nada Surf, a band two years shy of being together for two decades, ended the night on the Big Foot stage just as Vampire Weekend was wrapping up their set at the main stage. We could have been at the main stage with a bunch of people there for the hype but we figured why not support the bands who won’t get as much coverage? That’s what the indie music scene is all about, after all. So we stayed rooted at this stage after The Hold Steady to see Nada Surf, a band who still sounds as great as they did in the 90s.
