What happens when a music festival is canceled just a few days prior to its commencement? A ton of angry tweets, people demanding refunds, bands with no venues to play, and an army of Hanson fans screaming shenanigans.

As you may have heard Sunset Junction, the little community event that became a giant music festival, had the plug pulled just 48 hours before the function and what ensued was not the chaos one would expect. The community got together, venues booked bands, block parties formed, and an almost SXSW style event took over the Silverlake/Echo Park areas for a weekend of free (and some paid) shows. Sunset Junction continued to chug along on the streets of Silver Lake, California with all the hustle and bustle. However, the hustle and bustle was not anywhere near as busy as it was during the past few years. A lot of factors could have caused the decline in attendees this year. Perhaps the steep price for a single day entrance had gotten far too expensive for those who used to attend a no-fee Sunset Junction back in the day. Perhaps the headliners weren’t as big of names as people hoped they would be. Perhaps a lot of people attended different and smaller festivals that also had both music, food, beer and bands for no fee at all this weekend. There could have been plenty of other reasons people didn’t attend Sunset Junction this year. Nonetheless, we were there to catch some of our favorite local bands.

The annual Sunset Junction is in full swing this weekend and we were there to capture all the music during its first day on Saturday. As usual, the sun out in full effect making us who don’t handle the heat too well be a bit more cautious about beverage intake (that’s not water) during the day. However, that was a bit hard to do when they added a VIP section near the Bates stage.

Things seemed to run a bit smoother both behind the scenes (in regards to checking in) and the fair even added another stage that was locals only. Sponsored by The Fold, the new stage at Edgecliff was one we frequented the most since we’re absurdly in love with our local music scene. Experience Sunset Junction on Saturday through our eyes via our photos below!
