As you may or may not have heard, in between a programming block of new commercials and a concert by one of the worst popular bands of this or any generation, there was a football game broadcast on television last night between the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers. While whoever won or lost has become increasingly unimportant (hint: it wasn’t the team with the guy who’ll sexually assault you just for reading this), the spectacle surrounding the Super Bowl has, conversely, become increasingly important. All of which is why is sucks to be Christina Aguilera this morning.

Eminem is partnering with Lipton Brisk Iced Tea for a TV spot that debuts Sunday during the first quarter of Super Bowl XLV between the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Reportedly paid a cool $1 million for appearing as a claymation character, Eminem (aka Marshall Mathers) was provided a heavy dose of creative freedom to help develop the idea and the script for the commercial.

Whereas last year’s Super Bowl halftime show was all about classic rock by way of a solid performance from The Who, this year should feature quite a bit more booty shakin’ grooves courtesy of the The Black Eyed Peas, who were announced as the featured performer for the Super Bowl XLV halftime show.
The Grammy award-winning group will perform Feb. 6 at Cowboys Stadium. The announcement was made Thursday during the Dallas Cowboys’ game against the New Orleans Saints.

The Air Force Reserves versus The White Stripes. Who ya got?
In a statement posted on the Third Man Records website, The White Stripes have charged the Air Force Reserves with copyright infringement regarding the song “Fell In Love With A Girl,” which the Stripes, their label and their management claim was used without permission whatsoever for a TV advertisement that aired during the Super Bowl.

For some reason, Audi’s Super Bowl ad has become one of the most controversial topics in regards to the message they were sending out. Unlike the Vizio VIA TV commercial, Audi’s highlight on making a Green lifestyle “feel right” came across loud and clear as the “Green Police” were arresting people left and right for using plastic bottles and grocery bags, not composting orange rinds and using foam cups.
However, what we at BeatCrave find most interesting is that the ad not only featured Cheap Trick‘s classic, “Dream Police,” but that the band themselves had re-recorded a version just for the ad turning it into an environmental anthem.

There were plenty of commercials during the Super Bowl last night with musical guest appearances including KISS, T-Pain, Will.I.Am., and even Stevie Wonder (in the previously mentioned Volkswagon/Grizzly Bear ad). Most of them were well-received based on levels of humor or cleverness. However, not all of them were accepted by viewers and critics. Vizio, who had a one minute spot for its new VIA TV and started their ad with Beyoncé singing “Sweet Dreams,” was a severe hit or miss.

American Idol is on a roll! Last year, Jennifer Hudson sang the national anthem at the Super Bowl, and the year before the young Jordin Sparks wowed everyone with her incredible version of the national anthem. This year, Carrie Underwood will be singing her version at the Super Bowl — but the country singer won’t be alone, Queen Latifah will also be performing America the Beautiful.

If there are any people betting on which songs the half-time band will be playing this year at the Super Bowl, we’re not sure if there’s a point anymore. The Who‘s Pete Townshend has already revealed some of the set list to Billboard in an interview. We’re not sure if he meant to do it. We’re not sure if he’s telling the truth, but his answer is pretty predictable for a band of their era.
Most music acts who perform for half-time do their major hits so the crowd can feel comfortable enough to get crazy and sing along to songs they already know. Some have minor accidents (ahem, Janet and Justin), but some have used the highly sought spotlight to promote new material, such as Bruce Springsteen did during last year’s game.

The Super Bowl is less than a month away and many are excited for the big event which will happen on February 7th. These many people include musician, Prince. Apparently, he was so excited about Minnesota Vikings’ big win last weekend that he went ahead and wrote a fight song for the team to get everyone pumped up.
The song is titled, “Purple and Gold,” and it has gotten everyone talking about its strength or lack of strength for a football fight song. There have been a few good reviews of the song, but there have mostly been negative reviews. Minnesota’s own Pioneer Press goes as far to call it “Purple and Mold.”
