happyhollows Concert Picks: The Happy Hollows, The Silent League, LOrchidee DHawai...

When not falling down rabbit holes or figuring out exactly what to do with the potential of sunny weather, we suggest you take a gander at what the scene has to offer this weekend.

  • The Happy Hollows | Friday, March 5 | 8:00 pm | 21+ | $4 | Cake Shop, New York, NY – Map | Thanks to their brand of rock-hardness, our frequent favorite here at BeatCrave keeps us hip on the energy front and wielding smiles like sharp objects. We don’t know about you, but among other things, something tells us their lively midnight set was made to well complement the deliriousness that comes with a long day or a bottle of cold, cheap beer. With Forest City, Keepaway, and Tony Castles – for more information, call (212) 253-0036.
  • The Bird and The Bee | Friday, March 5 | 8:00 pm | $18 | El Rey Theater, Los Angeles, CA – Map | Mm, nom nom nom, here comes another favorite of ours. With a new album set to be released on March 23rd, Los Angeles’ very own The Bird and the Bee will be presenting the hits of Daryl Hall and John Oates in a way that you’ve ever heard them before (okay, perhaps somewhat like you’ve heard them before, but not entirely). We envision it will be like falling into a glorious vat of cheesecake. There’s currently no better comparison. With Juliette Commagere – Buy Tickets

BeatCrave Fav: The Bird and The Bee

The jazz influenced electro-pop duo, The Bird and The Bee, have only been around since 2006 but their popularity is skyrocketing. Although, both Inara George and Greg Kurstin had individually been in the music business for a plenty of years, (Inara’s father is Lowell George, a founding member of the rock and roll band, Little Feat. Greg has been building up his resume working with artist such as Beck, The Flaming Lips and now Lily Allen for It’s Not Me, It’s You), they didn’t really turn heads (or perked ears) until they teamed up. Now we have this infectious duo who smooths out the electronica genre and tops the sound off with angelic melodies. Some say The Bird and The Bees’ sound is “cute,” but that’s almost an insult if you’ve listened to their repertoire. There’s too many amazing components in their sound to be merely cute. There isn’t another band who sound quite like this duo. They’ve also got a unique style when it comes to fashion.

See for yourself by checking them out in our BeatCrave Fav series below. If you’re charmed as much as I always am by this duo, remember to vote for them in Friday’s poll!

fiveanimals09 2 05 Indie Rocks 5 Most Overused Animal Names

Bands named after animals are nothing new.  Some of the greatest bands of all time took their name from the animal kingdom.  And The Eagles did too!  But in recent years, indie bands in particular have shown a special sort of fascination with beastly band names.  And when it comes time to pick those names, they turn to these five animals more than any others…

Los Angeles’ favorite jazz-pop duo, The Bird and The Bee, are back with another album on January 27th. Although we loved the “bird” teaming up with Van Dyke Parks, we’re excited for the Inara George-Greg Kurstin partnership again because whatever they release will be one of a kind. Ray Guns Are Not Just The Future will be released on Blue Note Records.

Check out their latest video, “Polite Dance Song,” which is featured on the upcoming album.

Being faced with one of the most crucial elections any of us will/have ever experience, Nicole Morier of Electrocute held a party at Spaceland to help raise money for Obama. With help from The Bird and The Bee, Willoughby, The Polyamorous Affair, The Lady Tigra, Le C (King Crab), Wolfkin, Hard Place and DJ Lance Rock they put on Obamarama and raised $4,000 for the Obama campaign! The also happened to makes an awesome video in the process thanks to Brandon, ManiaTV and Spaceland Recordings.

In the webisodes Brandon talks with many of the bands, gets Cliffnotes on what propositions to vote “yes” and “no” on, and a whole lot more. There are also bits of the performances from The Bird and The Bee, Willoughby, Electrocute’s “Uh Oh”, The Poyamorous Affair’s “Whoever Controls the Groove” and Lady Tigra’s ode to Michelle Obama “First Black, First Lady,” which you can download here.
