We’ve heard it all before: Boy meets girl, boy falls in love (apparently, girl does too), they marry and make beautiful music together. Such is the case with husband and wife John and Sarah Ziebarth, but literally! The two made leaps when they decided to form Threadspinner in the sense that John, a research scientist attending grad school at Stanford, up and left so that he could enjoy this journey called life with a woman from the Midwest – Sarah. Playing what they call “lush, juicy rock”, the duo, completed by Warren Crone and Jesse Cardin to form a quartet, have played with the likes of West Indian Girl and Her Space Holiday. Their music is simple and basic, but it gets the word across.

It’s a story told a thousand times: husband and wife form a band, husband and wife meet new musicians, new musicians are added to the band, new band play live shows, new band produce an EP and then… that’s where the story can go one of many, many ways. Sadly, the aforementioned story usually ends with group of friends breaking up because group of friends have a hard time garnering fans outside of their own group of friends. After a few solid listens to ThreadSpinner’s, “Night Chorus,” however, it seems quite apparent that this particular group of husband and wife and new friends is going to follow a different path, one that includes a legion of fans and, hopefully, great success.

Despite being told repeatedly I’m a traitor to my gender, I’ve always gravitated toward all male bands. In recent years, my cold heart has been slightly melted by bands such as Rilo Kiley and Camera Obscura but still, overall, I like a dude lead singer. I simply can’t help it.
Sunday night, I accompanied friends to The Air Conditioned Supper Club in Venice. Imagine my surprise when, out of 4 bands, the one that blew me away had, you guessed it, a girl vocalist. Threadspinner is a band from Santa Barbara with a lot of spunk and a lead singer with a strong soulful voice. Seriously, this chic can wail. Plus, she’s super cute, which, let’s face it, helps when you’re fronting a band.
