Another weekend. Such a burden, this. To go out and have fun and express ourselves through our taste in music… it’s just so belaboring an endeavor. It’s a hell of a time; someone’s gotta do it. Let’s embark on fun times together, once concert pick at a time.

FYF Fest was experiencing a little New Jersey take-over with band such as Screaming Females, Ted Leo and, of course, indie rock favorites, Titus Andronicus. I have to admit that this was one of the sets I was looking forward to the most all day and as expected, I was not disappointed in the least bit. Screaming Females may have brought us some decent punk rock earlier in the day but Patrick Stickles and company were about to throw down with their own lo-fi punk. Moshing, dust, shouting, were all in the cards.

Titus Andronicus puts on one hell of a show. We should know; we were lucky enough to catch a set of their during SXSW and they also passed through Los Angeles as they are currently still on tour until the end of May. They’ve also released their sophomore album, The Monitor, and with a new album comes a new single with a freshly made video.
The video for “A More Perfect Union” involves the band marching on a snow-covered path in the forest, lead vocalist Patrick Stickles singing into a tape recorder, people throwing snow at each other, and one of those political and philosophical-like statements at the end.

After catching a bus on the way back to N. Congress, I headed on over to a more familiar spot on 5th Street to see Titus Andronicus at Republic Live. However, when I arrived at the venue it turned out that the set times were horribly mixed up and bands were both behind and swapping around in the line up. However, I did endure bands such as Jukebox of Ghost as I waited for my chance to finally see Titus. Not only are their albums great, but lead vocalist Patrick Stickles really knows how to connect to his audience in the midst of all that punk shoegaze. It was also a surprise to see Amy Klein up on stage with the band since I wasn’t aware that the group now had a female member.

SXSW continued for day 2 as I woke up on Thursday ready to see some more great music. Although Austin isn’t that huge, SXSW, itself, is quite large as there can be shows happening right in the middle of 6th street, beyond the freeway or a bus ride away. Thursday morning was the day I took the initiative to take a bus and see a show further away, and it turned out that it was very well worth it.
