In sports, a seemingly minor injury can have a lasting impact on the player’s productivity for seasons after it occurs. But in music, there are only a few rare cases where an injury, outside of drugs and death, has caused a band to breakup or a career to end. U2 should be optimistic after Bono‘s back injury forced the Irish legends to cancel their American tour and Glastonbury headlining appearance. In fact, the pop stars have already completed a string of dates in Europe and are planning ahead for 2011.

Don’t be shocked when you hear that Muse could (should) be the world’s biggest band. They’re awesome. Today, Yahoo reminds us that the band has been opening for U2 over the past year, and given their tour hiatus, might just take over their position as the headliners. But here’s the thing — Muse and U2, totally different. Yes, both appeal to the masses but the times are changing. Bono just doesn’t do it for me anymore.

Julie Taymor, director of the upcoming Spider-man musical with music by U2, Spider-man: Turn Off the Dark (sweet, sweet Jesus), spoke about U2’s music for the show today on Good Morning America (because if there is one thing America is clamoring for, it’s a Broadway musical about a teenage boy bitten by a radioactive spider and who develops the ability to spray webbing all over New York, backed with music by modern day – a.k.a. not good – U2). Speaking about Bono and the Edge’s tunes for the show, Taymor did slip in a bit of good news: it doesn’t sound like U2.

With Bono on the mend, the U2 360° Tour dates in the US, which were postponed due to the singer’s emergency back surgery, have all been rescheduled for Spring/Summer 2011. They should call the new shows Return of the Claw, a nod to the obscenely massive stage design accompanying U2 on their trek around the world on the 360° Tour.
The North American tour begins May 21 next year at Invesco Field in Denver and ends on July 23 in Minneapolis. The 2010 European tour, which has not been affected, begins as scheduled on August 6th in Turin.

Well, the hits just keep on coming for obscure Irish rock act U2 – it seems like pretending to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders isn’t always enough to deflect bad luck. In the wake of a massive tour postponement due to frontman Bono’s emergency back surgery (insert your own ‘he’s-carrying-the-weight-and-pain-of-the-world-and-it-hurt-his-back’ dig here), Spinner reported today that U2 bassist Adam Clayton is suing the band’s financial controller, Gaby Smyth, for alleged negligence.
Smyth “controls the band’s money and knows the intricacies of the group’s investments and holdings,” and, along with “two other accountants in his firm” were named in legal papers filed in Dublin’s High Court. While the accusations have not been made public, Spinner reports that “the case may have its roots in money management issues that surfaced during Clayton’s recent High Court case against Carol Hawkins, the bassist’s former housekeeper, who allegedly defrauded him of up to €1.8million.”

Who would have thought that one bad back would throw everything askew? Bono‘s back is causing some major trouble for the super-sexy NYC band Interpol. A few days ago, we told you guys that U2 was forced to cancel their Glastonbury gig, plus their 16-date U.S. tour due to Bono’s recent emergency surgery. Consequence of Sound tells that Interpol, being U2′s support throughout the tour, has also been forced to pull some shows. Continue Reading

Due to Bono’s back surgery last week — you don’t think it gets any easier to carry the weight of the world and that ego once you’re over the hill, do you? — U2 has been forced to postpone or cancel several upcoming gigs, including a headlining slot in England’s Glastonbury festival. Glastonbury’s response? Replace one increasingly cartoonish band with a literal cartoon band: Gorillaz.
