MG 6592 NO CANCER! Benefit: Review and Photos

Last Sunday, all the hipsters who couldn’t care less about the Super Bowl headed on over to Los Angeles’ art gallery and performance venue, The Strange, for a very good cause. Starting at noon, bands such as Abe Vigoda, Darker My Love, No Age, Nodzzzz, Best Coast and Vivian Girls came to the charming location to help raise money for a dear friend’s mom who needed the funds due to cancer.

Those Darlins 1 LA 112309 Concert Picks: Those Darlins, AA Bondy, Vivian Girls...

We have five reasons for you to get out off the couch this weekend for reasons other than spontaneously yelling “TOUCHDOWN!” or running to the kitchen for chips and beer. Check out our concert picks below:

  • Those Darlins | Friday, February 5 | 8:00 pm | 18+ | $13 | Bowery Ballroom, New York, NY – Map | Country rock never sounded so edgy, so sixties, so fresh. No doubt about it, our recent BeatCrave Fav was chosen for a reason. These girls are seriously fabulous.  Biased? Never! With The So So Glos and Pine Hill Haints - Buy Tickets
  • Helen Stellar | Friday, February 5 | 8:30 pm | 21+ | $5 | Spaceland, Los Angeles, CA – Map | Rock isn’t dead, neither is band ideology. Hidden, yes, albeit slightly by the influx of robot-like stylings and everyone else who “wants to be a star”. Helen Stellar has been around for a while, so its members know what we’re referring to. It’s refreshing to hear that they’ve kept their heads about them, for the benefit of our ears and minds. With Shiloe, Wet & Reckless and Dirt Bird – Buy Tickets

Vivian Girls: When I’m Gone Music Video

Vivian Girls When Im Gone Music Video Vivian Girls: When Im Gone Music Video

The Vivian Girls have released a video for the track, “When I’m Gone,” which is off of their latest album, Everything Goes Wrong.

Although we understand why Cassie Ramone may be sporting a super-girly and retro hairstyle (she’s a model now), their over the top hairstyles and extra lip gloss is quite a juxtaposition to their fast-paced punk rhythms in midst of the three part harmonies. However, the video still suits the girls as it is sun-streaked a bit out of focus. These DIY girls can’t get too glamorous on us.

Check it out below and let us know what you think!

Vivian Girls Concert Review Vivian Girls: Concert Review

The Vivian Girls first gained an indie following after they played local venues and sold their music on homemade CD-Rs. So it was no surprise that they fit right at home in The Echo, a venue that is not so grand in size but notable for the up and coming artists they book.

With openers, The Black and White Years and The Beets (their touring partner), Ali Koehler, Kickball Katy, and Cassie Ramone kicked off a great weekend with their popular distorted sound overlaid with old-fashioned three harmony pop melodies. None of the girls talked much during their set, but the music spoke for itself as we took in Koehler’s hard hitting beats, Katy’s jumping bass lines (played on a bass guitar that looks very similar to one Paul McCartney has), and Ramone’s leading vocals.

Weekend Roundup: Michael Jackson, Mink DeVille, Diditleak Updates

MichaelJackson8 9 09Ah Weekend Roundup: Michael Jackson, Mink DeVille, Diditleak Updates

In case you missed anything, here are some music news from this past weekend:

  • Michael Jacksonh ad a insurance policy for the upcoming tour dates in London that was supposed to be up to $17.5 million in damages if the shows were to be cancelled. According to NME.com, that poly was to be void in the case if he was found to be in possession of illegal drugs or if the singer was involved in the “illicit taking of drug.” So who is responsible for the damages? Will Jackson’s doctors giving him a deadly dose of drugs also void the policy? (NME)
  • Diditleak Updates: Here are some albums that have leaked in the last couple days, according to diditleakss’ twitter account.  Only one is due this coming Tuesday, the rest still have time. Neon Indian | Psychic Chasms | Due out October 13th; Health | Get Color | Due out Sept. 8th; Vivian Girls | Everything Goes Wrong | Due out September 8th; Winds of Plague | The Great Stone War | Due out August 11th. (diditleak)
  • Willy DeVillep, of Mink DeVille fame, passed away on August 6th, according to NME.com. As part of the more respected 1970′s New York punk scene, DeVille will be missed and remembered always. (NME).

What do  you think about the whole Magic Jackson concert damage policy? Should the policy pay for these movie? Which diditleak albums have you been listening to?

Vivian Girls and Woods Members Create The Babies

Vivian Girls and Woods Members Create The Babies

Are they making babies? Not exactly. However, The Babies is what Cassie Ramone (front woman of Vivian Girls), Kevin Morby (bassist of Woods), and Justin Sullivan (drummer of of Bossy) are calling their lo-fi supergroup for now.

Conceived by Ramone and Morby as they casually wrote songs together in their shared Brooklyn apartment last year, they’re both not sure if the songs will actually become a full-length album. According to Pitchfork, Ramone says that Morby will be the main songwriters which will be a change for the both of them. Ramone writes most of the songs for Vivian Girls and Jeremy Earl writes most of the songs for Woods. Whether it is taking a back seat or becoming the leading member, The Babies is bound to gain a following as they get ready to record a few songs. With Jarvis Taveniere of Woods producing a sound where Vivian Girls’ distorted pop melodies and Woods’ psychedelic vibe converge, it’s bound to be a raw Brooklyn sound.

Vivian Girls: BeatCrave Fav

viviangirls sl051809jpeg Vivian Girls: BeatCrave Fav

Like so many internet phenomena bands, the hype surrounding them can die as quickly as it accumulates. Sometimes the hype is legitimate and sometimes it is a just a waste of everyone’s breath. Vivian Girls, however, have had the staying power in popularity, sales, and musicianship to surpass any hype. As one of the current bands alongside The Pains of Being Pure At Heart, Wavves, and Passion Pit, Vivian Girls have not once loosened their grip on me since the first time I had discovered them.

Their combination of reverb, noise pop, and tight harmonies alone just kick you in the gut because the sound is that honest, simple, and catchy. It’s not a surprise that their own hand-written CD-Rs immediately sold out once the Brooklyn area got to take in a show.

Check Vivian Girls out in our BeatCrave Fav series below! We’ve got a ton of videos, photos, tour dates, an exclusive interview and more. If you still can’t get enough of Vivian Girls, then make sure to vote for them in Friday’s poll!
