Odds are if you have ever stepped foot into an Urban Outfitters, or you’re a proud member of the Hipster phenomenon, then you already know about the San Diego based noise-pop, surf rock band Wavves. The band, which includes Nathan Williams, Billy Hayes, and Stephen Pope, is signed to Fat Possum Records. After their self-titled release in 2008, they quickly became Pitchfork darlings and moved laterally into high praise with their sophomore album, Wavvves, in 2009.
On August 3rd, Wavves released King of the Beach, a 12-track album that differed in sound from their previous two. The gritty, distorted production sound is cleaner on King, streamlining the album into a polished recording that still maintains the garage band feel.
Before you run out to buy your copy, check out what the critics have been saying about King of the Beach:

Indie-punk darlings, and Pitchfork Festival alumni, Wavves were the first to play the Budweiser Stage at Lollapalooza on Friday and expectations were high. While the band’s albums display their penchant for combining the jangly pop-sensibilities of Polaris with up-tempo punk, their set at Lolla made the band seem completely underwhelming when it comes to live performance.
As the trio made its way onto stage singer/guitarist Nathan Williams appeared to be experiencing some issues with his guitar rig. After quickly recovering from the difficulties that were impeding the band’s start, they busted into their first song with vigor all their own. Soon thereafter, it all seemed to fall apart.

Lollapalooza 2010 kicked off with a bang! We got a great work out from walking from one end of the festival to the other but each trek was well-worth it for all the artists we got to see on the first day. Besides, Friday’s headliner was Lady Gaga. Not many people are going to forget that whether they were thinking, “I love her!” or “She’s just creepy” or “This is too weird.” (We actually heard people say these thoughts out loud, by the way!)
However, we want to focus on all the other great acts that just offered us all they had: The music. There’s a special connection between an audience member and a band member when he or she speaks into the microphone. They can thank us for watching but we’re really just thankful they’ve brought the sounds. They can make jokes and we’ll chuckle and have a moment even though there are hundreds surrounding us. Check Lollapalooza Day 1 through our eyes with the photos below!

So, we finally made it into Lollapalooza in Grant Park, Chicago just as B.o.B was taking the Adidas Mega stage which was booming enough for us to hear all the way in the media tent. It’s a gorgeous Friday but what we Los Angeles folk forgot about was the humidity here in the Midwest! It’s been feeling like the Valley in 90 degree but we were stoked to catch our first full act at Lollapalooza 2010. Who was up first? Our neighbors from San Diego, California – Wavves.

Wavves probably had the largest crowd for the first half of FYF Fest. Both Nathan Williams and Zach Hill pleased the crowd with their spastic beats sprinkled with “oooh”-filled melodies.
Check the both of them out in our photos below!

Looks like the duo, WAVVES, is back on track. After a humiliating breakdown at the Primavera Sound Festival, Nathan Williams and his band member, Ryan Ulsh, are out to prove to the world that they still maintain all the credibility the online buzz had given them at the beginning of the year – even after making rookie mistakes of taking too many drugs and dangerously mixing alcohol which negatively affected their live performances.
The tour beings in on August 28th at San Diego’s Street Scene and goes through October 7th in Los Angeles at the Echoplex. Bands on the tour roster include Ganglians and The Soft Pack. Check out the tour dates below as well as their video for “No Hope Kids.”

Rock n’ roll, sex and drugs have all rolled into one when it comes to being a musician. Boozing it up is the activity that probably comes in second after making their music. However, there ARE musicians out there doing their thing without having obliteration in their daily itinerary.
This weekend, one of 2009′s biggest blog sensations, Wavves had a meltdown at the Primavera Sound Festival. He blamed it on his mental health (from a grueling tour schedule), ecstacy, valium, xanax, and his current drinking problem. His apology was posted on his site but has now been taken down. You can read the entry we found from a cached version after the jump.
Mixing different types of alcohol is already dangerous enough. So mixing those types of drugs? Not a smart move and definitely not professional. How long will we able to accept musicians’ excuses for their lack of professionalism? Can we always accept their blame on drugs and booze when it is their decision to start with? Vote below and let us know!
