cuomo weezer Weezer Leaves Major Label, Goes Indie

Pitchfork reports today that the long-running rock and power-poppers Weezer have left Geffen Records, their major-label home since 1994, which saw the release of their debut album, Weezer (the blue one).   Further, the band has decided to “go independent.”  It may seem odd of the admittedly already odd band to ditch the benefits of a major label, but it is certainly far more interesting than anything they’ve committed to disc since 2002’s Maladroit (proceed to go nuts, comments wall).

Weezer Returns To The Stage Work On Shrek Song Weezer Returns To The Stage, Work On Shrek Song

It’s been a whirlwind of year for Weezer. They’ve been pretty successeful with all their crazy ideas such as naming their album Raditude, using a flying dog on the cover art, not only endorsing but making their own Snuggie, rocking out as giant bugs for Yo Gabba Gabba! and more. However, the end of the year took an unfortunate turn when Weezer’s front man, Rivers Cuomo, was injured in a severe bus accident while they were out on tour.

Although Cuomo was released from the hospital shortly after, doctors told him he needed more time to recover before he hit the stage again. The rest of the year end’s tour dates were canceled. However, Weezer is all set to go back on the road now. That’s not all they’re up to either.

Weezers Rivers Cuomo Discharged From Hospital Weezers Rivers Cuomo Discharged From Hospital

After spending nearly a week in the hospital after last weekend’s bus accident, Weezer‘s front man, Rivers Cuomo, was finally released from the hospital and is on his way back home. He looks pretty good based on this photo above from Weezer’s blog, and we’re happy to know that he’s okay and able to continue performing and working for the band’s upcoming west coast dates.

Unfortunately, since the accident happened in New York, Cuomo has to travel across the country to his home which is Los Angeles. So getting on a bus again may seem a bit intimidating for anyone who has gone through what he has just experienced. However, the band says that things should be great on the way back.

Weezer Teams Up With Gossip Girl and Adam Lambert Weezer Teams Up With Gossip Girl and Adam Lambert

Lady Gaga and Kanye West may be up for the craziest person of 2009 in regards to the music biz, but we think Weezer‘s Rivers Cuomo may be next in line. He and his band just don’t get tired of throwing us random news, and we’re not sure if we’re sad about the loss of Weezer’s novelty anymore either because we can’t lie: All this new information is kind of interesting no matter how bizarre.

Covering Lady Gaga, using a flying dog photo for their album Raditude, creating their own Wuggie, working with Katy Perry, and dressing up in bug costumes seems like just the beginning of WTF moments. There’s more!
